Dengue Treatment In Unani

Although the monsoon brings relief from the heat of summer, it also brings with itself the dangers or trouble of Dengue. Dengue fever is caused by the bite of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which has the capability to spread four different dengue viruses.
Once you are infected with one of the dengue viruses, you develop immunity to it for the rest of your life. Nevertheless, you can still contract the other three viruses, so you can get all four dengue viruses in your lifetime. The viruses that cause dengue fever are related to those that cause yellow fever and the West Nile viral infection. Dengue Treatment can be done with home remedies and Unani medicines.
According to estimates, India contributed 34 of 96 million apparent global dengue infections; India's overall prevalence of dengue infection was 48ยท7%.
Cause and Transmission
Dengue virus is transmitted from one person to another through a bite from the female Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Only female mosquitoes transmit the dengue virus. This mosquito can bite at any time but is mainly active during ...
... the daytime. Found both inside and outside homes, it is most active in the hours after sunrise and before sunset. Apart from that, Aedes Albopictus which is another species of mosquito can also transmit the virus.
Symptoms
If you get dengue fever, symptoms usually begin about 4 to 10 days after the initial symptoms. In many cases, the symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for signs of the flu or another infection.
In young children and people who have never had an infection, the disease may be milder than in older children and adults. Common symptoms usually last 2 to 7 days and may include:
Severe headache that may be throbbing and continuous.
Continuous fever with a break on the 4th or 5th day, followed by a recurrence till 7th or 8th day.
Exhaustion, severe muscle, and joint pain.
Loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Skin rashes can be seen on the patient's body. Initial flushing/redness
and faded macular rash can be seen in the first 1-2 days.
In severe cases, bleeding usually occurs from the gums, nose, and swollen glands.
There are times when rash, fever, and headache all occur at once. This is called the Dengue Triad. Other features include severe discomfort behind the veyes (retro-orbital pain) and redness in palms and soles.
Protection and Lifestyle changes
Environmental management and personal protection against mosquitoes are important in preventing the disease. If someone is traveling or living in tropical areas where dengue fever is common, the protection from mosquitoes may help reduce bites. Consider the following preventive
measures to stay away from Dengue fever:
Keep all drains of the home free from choking and turn over all water storage containers after use.
Change the water of bowls and vases on alternate days. Make sure flower pots are dry as well.
Cover all tanks, containers that hold water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and accessing the water.
Properly dispose of articles that can collect water, such as empty water bottles, cans, and old tires.
Put BTI (Bacillus Thuringiensis) insecticide in roof gutters monthly to clear blockage of gutters.
Wear protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. Wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts, socks, and shoes and staying indoors two hours after sunrise and before sunset will help.
Use mosquito repellent sprays for personal protection when visiting places where dengue is endemic.
Unani Home Remedies
Several dengue remedies are easily available in the garden, kitchen, and market that can treat Dengue patients. These home remedies will help fight the dengue virus and enhance the effectiveness of the medicines you are taking. But, before using any of these remedies, prior consultation with your doctor (Ayurvedic/Unani) is always recommended. Let's learn together the various home remedies for dengue treatment at home:
Keep 10-12 Papaya leaves with water in an earthen pot for 11-12 hours and then strain it. Add some raisins (Kishmish) in the same water and give the water with raisins to the Dengue patient. It is scientifically proven that the Papaya leaf is a sure cure for platelet deficiency during Dengue fever.
Take 10-12 Raihan leaves (Basil, Tulsi) and one black pepper (Kali mirch). Grind it and make small size pills. Dengue patients are recommended to take 2 pills with lukewarm water twice a day. This is an age-old Unani medicine. You can also boil Tulsi and drink the water as tea for effective results.
To increase the blood count, drink 1 glass of Anar juice (pomegranate juice) and 1 glass of Maweez Munaqqa juice (made with blending milk and Munaqqa together). Also, drink Orange juice that helps to increase digestion and urinary output. It even promotes antibodies for faster recovery.
Fruits rich in vitamin C like Amla are advised as vitamin C helps in better absorption of iron.
Hubba/Methi (fenugreek) leaves if taken in herbal tea (10-15 leaves boiled in water) are proven to reduce fever. This herbal drink acts as a cleansing and soothing agent for the human body.
Dengue Treatment (Ilaj-bil-Dawa)
Along with the home remedies to treat dengue fever, you should consider some Unani formulations for effective results. Here are some of the dengue medicines that you can consider:
Habbe Bukhar: It contains Satt-e- gilo, which is antipyretic, so it reduces fever and headache.
Dose: 2 tablets twice a day.
Sharbat Unaab: As the name suggests, it contains Unnab (Ber/Jujube), which is a very effective blood purifier.
Dose: Before breakfast, take 4 tablespoons (40ml). Mix with 1 cup of water.
Sharbat Khaksi: Sharbat Khaksi contains Gaozaban, Khaksi, Sauf/ Badyan; their combined effect reduces dengue symptoms like rashes, pain, inflammation, and loss of appetite.
Dose: Take 5 tablespoons (25ml) and mix it with 1 cup of lukewarm water and consume twice a day
Khameera Marvareed: It is a health tonic for vital organs because it contains Sandal, Ilaichi, Zafran, Rose, Pomegranate, Apple extract, etc.
Dose: 2-4 tablespoons twice a day
Note: Along with the medicines, the patients have to follow a strict regimen as per the concept of the Unani system. And patients are, therefore, strongly advised to avoid self-medication.
Consult with an Unani doctor always for the right course of medications.
Conclusion
Here, every measure is applied to control the symptoms, restrict the complications and enhance the platelets count. Dengue being a fatal disease and not having any specific treatment is a challenge for the medical fraternity and health department. As vaccines for Dengue are not available, only supportive treatment (treatment of symptoms), like controlling fever, therapy for pain and reminding the patients to drink more fluids/ juices, especially when they have a high fever, are advised.
