Primer is used in order to provide a base onto which you can apply your makeup as well as helping to cover up problem areas like wrinkles, blemishes and large pores. Why use a primer? The base that it provides offers a smooth surface that the makeup can adhere to more readily and can assist in giving the appearance of a smooth complexion. The best makeup primers
also provide the added benefit of offering protection from ultra-violet rays and can help to hydrate the skin. Both good things if you want to keep your skin looking youthful and in tip-top shape. When deciding on whether or not you need to use a primer, a good litmus test is to apply all of your makeup without a primer and see if you are happy with both the immediate results and how the results last through the day. If there are areas of concern then you may want to try using a primer to see if it fixes the problem.

OK so how do you use primer for optimum results?

The first step doesn’t actually involve the primer. Before applying anything you should cleanse, ...
... tone and moisturise your face. Although primers can moisturise, they are not a replacement for a solid skin routine.

The primer should generally be the first makeup item that you apply. There are cases where the primer is applied afterwards but generally speaking they are the first item that you apply to your skin....Once the moisturiser that you have applied is fully absorbed, take a small amount of primer and apply it evenly over your face. It is best to use your fingers to apply primer and before you applying your next makeup item (like foundation for example) be sure that the primer has rested for about a minute or so. Remember that on top of this you will probably be applying your foundation so don’t apply too much primer. If you have dry skin then you will be able to apply slightly more than if you have oily skin. The reason for this is of course because the dry skin will absorb more of the moisture that you apply to it whereas oily skin will cause the primer to sit on top of the skin for longer. Just be aware of your skin type and through a little trial and error you should work out which works best or you. The “caked-on” look is never good so remember that less really can be more. When applying, pay special attention to the T-zone and any other areas that may become especially oily or dry as these are the things which may affect your makeup.

Because of the different type of skin there are, of course, different types of primer that you can use to get the optimum results.

If you have mature skin then be sure to look out for a primer that is designed to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and larger pores. Apply in this instance with gently patting action on the areas that you are trying to cover rather than circular motions. If you have oily skin, you will probably want to use a matte effect primer to combat the oil that builds on your skin. You could also consider applying some witch hazel during your skin care routine in order to reduce the amount of oil that builds on your skin. For dry skin you the obvious remedy is to use a primer that has added hydration effects.

And so, to sum up. Primers allow for the best possible results from your makeup and help those results last longer. They also assist in hiding any blemishes or skin imperfections and protect from UV light and pollution. Remember that less is more and that it is important to pick the right moisturiser for your skin type – matte for oily skin and hydrating for dry skin.
