In Scotland, we have very stringent fire safety regulations that are in place to help reduce injury and death caused by fire. New, tighter regulations were due to come into force in February 2021, however, enforcement has now been delayed until 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. This gives people a little longer to update their fire protection systems. These new regulations are to protect you and your family so we would advise installing or updating your smoke and fire alarm system as soon as possible. It will be the property owner’s responsibility to meet the new standard, however, the legal duty to enforce the standard rests with local authorities.

You may think that you don't want the spend the money to upgrade your smoke alarm system as nobody will check it anyway but there are very good reasons for getting this work done.

Everyone remembers the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in London. The new law is being put in place to help prevent injury, loss of life, and damage to property. Just thinking about what the people of Grenfell Tower went through should make you want the best fire alarm system possible to ...
... prevent the same from happening to you and your family.

Also, if you decide to sell your home, it will need to comply with this new law.

So what is the new law and how does it affect your home?

Every home in Scotland will be required to have interlinked fire alarms by February 2022. The new law states:

- One smoke alarm is to be installed in the room which is most frequently used for general daytime living purposes.
- One smoke alarm is to be fitted in every circulation space on each storey, such as hallways and landings.
- One heat alarm is to be installed in the kitchen.
- All alarms should be ceiling-mounted and interlinked.
- Where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance, such as a boiler, fire (including open fires), or heater, a carbon monoxide detector is also required. This does not need to be linked to the fire alarms.
- If you live in a one-bedroom flat, you will need two smoke alarms and one heat alarm.

At Safe Simple Secure in Edinburgh, our team is fully trained to install an appropriate fire alarm system that meets this new law.

We can also carry out a security audit while we are at your home and recommend appropriate house security.
