Hunting In The South Remains A Passion For Many
Hunting - for individuals, hunting clubs and families all over the world -remains a passion that millions often practice throughout their lives. This is certainly true for Americans, and in Southern states where quality deer herds are raised in for example the Black Belt of Alabama and elsewhere, the industry contributes to the greater economy by pumping in millions of dollars annually into the government coffers.
This, in addition to the excitement that the hunter can experience when they set out, forms part of the bigger picture. For many years several hunters showed interest in whitetail deer hunting, among options, simply to record a trophy, buck with impressive antlers and great memories.
Youth hunting as an activity has also been promoted for many decades since the new generation that will take over from those that one day may no longer be out there, has to be taught everything – about the industry, about principles and the ethos that supports responsible hunting practices and those ideals that support wildlife and animal conservation as the basis for successful hunting.
In the last number of ...
... years, the industry has also seen the emergence of the locavore, that person that supports their local industry, i.e., food sources from their region. The locavore, it can be said, is the hunter that supports initiatives to promote the local hunting industry insofar it helps to promote locally grown food, to also include the meat from locally harvested deer and other animals.
Initiatives by different bodies to promote hunting in the US, such as the R3 movement that seeks to recruit, retain and reactivate outdoor recreation participation also help drive the activities of the locavore which, ultimately, serves the goals of the greater wildlife and conservation ideal.
Locavores do not only promote the consumption of local produce and meant; they also want to see people hunt organic, locally grown sourced meat to provide for their families – a healthy way of eating clean meat harvested ethically, i.e., hunted according to ethical practices that will help support wildlife conservation – for future generations to also benefit from.
On the first level, the locavore promotes the meat from deer that enjoy a free-range existence in a specific region, but it goes further: hunters from further away are also encouraged to visit the region and leave with good quality meat, in addition to the antlers they hope to take home with them. Not only do the locals, therefore, benefit from the locavore in Alabama, Georgia, or Florida, for example, but visiting hunters that promote the lodges they visit, or the states or regions where they have good, positive experiences when they visit.
In the end, it all contributes to a greater awareness of the region’s hunting industry, be that to hunt deer or even to help promote wing-shooting. Lodges are well aware of this type of promotion they can benefit from; therefore the best ones compete to offer the deer hunter and the wing-shooter the best facilities, they make sure they employ managers and biologists that understand what conservation is about and how to implement its principles, and also how to develop these so that the hunter is offered a great experience – not only the locavore but also the visitor from out of state.
Whitetail deer hunting, wild turkey hunting, shooting doves and pheasant – all of these disciplines are promoted throughout the South, with some regions and lodges outperforming others in terms of their efforts to create the perfect habitat for herds and flocks to thrive – for the hunter to make memories. And to leave with quality meat.
The locavore plays their part in this arrangement too - firstly to support local and secondly to help promote the region elsewhere.
