The 2021 Global Hunger Index list reveals India has slipped seven places and now is ranked 101st out of 116 countries. With a score of 27.5, India’s hunger situation is now bracketed under ‘alarming’ level. This could also be an after effect of COVID-19 pandemic, but that does not give us a reason to overlook the hunger issue.

Government and non-governmental organisations across India are already working to address the hunger situation. One such organisation is Akshaya Chaitanya, an NGO in Mumbai that is addressing hunger in public hospitals. Often, hunger in hospitals goes unnoticed, maybe because we always relate hospital to health, and not hunger. However, the reality in public hospitals has a different story to tell. Public hospitals in Mumbai are the only option for marginalised communities of the city in the event of a health crisis. These patients hail from slums and are mostly daily wage workers or low-income workers. They neither have medical insurance nor any savings, making hospitalisation a huge burden for this section of people. To meet hospital expenses, they either sell their belongings or borrow ...
... money from friends and neighbours. Many a times, in their effort to arrange or save money, they cut on food cost by remaining hungry.

About Akshaya Chaitanya

Akshaya Chaitanya is an NGO in Mumbai with the objective of eradicating hunger in a sustainable way. It is an initiative of HKM Charitable Foundation. As an initial intervention, the NGO will focus on providing free and nutritious food in the city’s public hospitals and gradually expand its service to ensure food security among different segments of the society.
- Vision: To open up a world of opportunities for every vulnerable by ensuring food security.
- Mission: To provide food to one lakh beneficiaries everyday across different vulnerable situations in Mumbai by 2025.
- Current intervention: The Hospital Feeding Programme is the current intervention of Akshaya Chaitanya. Through this, the NGO aims to ensure food security for out-patients and family members of in-patients in public hospitals in Mumbai.

Akshaya Chaitanya’s Hospital Feeding in Mumbai

As an NGO in Mumbai, Akshaya Chaitanya has stepped in to support food needs of out-patients and family members of in-patients in public hospitals. By giving food for free, Akshaya Chaitanya aims at taking off the burden of food cost and helping the underprivileged people to save money for treatment.

Akshaya Chaitanya prepares the food at its state-of-the-art, FSSAI certified kitchen in Byculla and follows a cyclic locally palatable menu. To ensure the beneficiaries receive healthy and hygienic meals, Akshaya Chaitanya takes care of end-to-end operations of the Hospital Feeding Programme. Right from procurement of raw materials, to food preparation, packing, delivering, and serving at hospitals, this NGO in Mumbai makes sure each morsel is freshly prepared, nutritious, and hygienic.

Akshaya Chaitanya Impacting Lives

Initiated in July 2021, Akshaya Chaitanya has been impacting thousands of lives in four hospitals through the hospital feeding in Mumbai. By far, it has already served a cumulative of more than 80,000 meals covering St. George Hospital, Cama & Albless Hospital, Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, and BYL Nair Hospital. Akshaya Chaitanya aims to reach out to more people across the city.
