The Dresden Files is an excellent book series of urban fantasy/action novels based on the world created by American author Jim Butcher. The first book, Storm Front, was released in 2021 by Roc Books (now defunct). It was a promising start to a series that would span several novels, but Butcher later abandoned it, and the rest is history. But his fan base has been growing ever since he released the latest novel, The Witch's Pupil, in 2021. So what is so great about The Dresden Files book series?
For fans of urban fantasy, Jim Butcher has created a complex yet familiar world. The protagonist in The Dresden Files, Thomas Edison, is a young man with psychic abilities. In exchange for helping to find his missing father, Thomas is offered a position with a prestigious, ancient masonry company. Everything goes well for the time until a strange, unidentified serial killer sends Thomas on a goose chase across the snowy wastes of England, intent on killing the young man for information regarding his ...
... family's history. Once there, Thomas must fight his way through a giant maze, while battling a pack of vicious creatures, including his own mother who have taken up residence in the city's water tower.

The Dresden Files television show

The Dresden Files television show is similar to many TV serials in the fact that it is highly polished, completely researched, and written in a clear, concise manner. The writers obviously spent a lot of time creating a world that is unique and different from our own, and they succeeded by creating a cast of powerful characters that are real people. This makes for a very interesting read, and it also makes the book very realistic and down to earth. One of the best things about the television show is just how realistic it is. No matter how far the series has come, it is always in an excellent condition.

The novels have Thomas lying in a coma, unable to move, as he deals with hallucinations and a host of other symptoms. At first, there is no reason to doubt what the doctor tells Thomas, but when a tragic event occurs in the novel that shatters the illusion of reality, Thomas' perception of the world around him comes crashing down. He is placed in a hospital, and is told that he is suffering from amnesia, and that he is in fact a descendent of vampires. Thomas is then told that he must travel to the capital, because the high council wants to ban the practice of black magic, and that only a master can perform the ritual that will allow them to regain the throne. As the series progresses, the reader is gradually forced to guess at what exactly the council is worried about. Eventually, after nearly all the secrets are revealed, you start to wonder why they were so worried in the first place.

In the TV show, Thomas is also put under the spotlight for much of the time. Unlike in the books, in which he is merely a passenger in the car of Harry, this time Thomas finds himself in the thick of things. The writers make it very clear that in order to perform the ritual, one needs absolute confidence in one's ability to do so. Without it, people are afraid of doing black magic, which is the only thing that can truly stop the vampires, with the exception of the highest magicians, who are somehow able to protect themselves from their creator, Vampires. In order to perform the ritual, the high councilor for London, attends a massive black magic competition, in order to find a master of black magic. He does not win the competition, but it is important that the readers recognize that such high power is indeed available for people in order to perform the ritual.

I personally prefer the television version of the story, but either way you look at it, both versions leave you with a great book series. The Dresden Files is my personal favorite. I have read all of the books, and I look forward to watching the upcoming TV show. The series is truly worth your time. It is written in an easy-to-understand language, while at the same time keeping you up to date on what is happening in New York City.
