"Gut health" refers to the balance of bacteria in the many parts of the digestive system. To digest food without discomfort, our esophagus, stomach and intestines should all work together as a team. However, that's not the case for the estimated 70 million Americans who suffer from digestive disorders.

In the gastrointestinal tract, gut health refers to the physical state and physiologic function of the many parts. A person's gut health refers to how their gastrointestinal tract is physically and physiologically functioning.

What is the importance of gut health?

The gut breaks down all food into simple forms that can enter the bloodstream and deliver nutrients to the body. In order to achieve this, your digestive system must be healthy. Healthy guts are filled with beneficial bacteria and immune cells that fight infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Through nerves and hormones, the gut communicates with the brain, which helps maintain general health and well-being.

Gut health problems: what are the symptoms?

We all experience digestive problems from time to time, such as abdominal ...
... pain, bloating, loose stools, constipation, heartburn, nausea, or vomiting. It may be a sign of an underlying problem that requires medical attention if symptoms persist. Blood in the stool, black stool (a sign of bleeding in the gut), severe vomiting, fever, stomachaches, trouble swallowing food, throat pain when swallowing food, or jaundice (a yellow discoloration of the skin or eyes) could potentially indicate an underlying digestive problem. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor.

Which foods promote gut health?

1. Eat a variety of whole grains and lentils.

2. Don't eat out. When I do eat out, I avoid buffets that can lead to overeating.

3. When you are full, stop eating.

4. Get your daily veggies and fruit from fresh produce.

5. Homemade yogurt is good for you.

6. To satisfy my sweet tooth, I buy just one piece of candy or cake at a time. To avoid binging, I never keep extra food at home.

7. Weekly farmers markets are a good place to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables.

8. Don't overeat nuts - just eat them moderately. Just a few are enough.

9. Diet drinks and low-fat, sugar-free foods should be avoided. In addition to causing bloating, artificial sweeteners are not satiating and can lead to overeating.

10. Stay hydrated throughout the day. To replenish electrolytes, I add lime and a pinch of salt to my water.

Fresh vegetables and fruits are excellent choices in general. Red meat should be avoided in favor of poultry and fish. Avoid charring meats to reduce your risk of stomach and colon cancer. Acid reflux symptoms can be controlled by avoiding excessive caffeine, alcohol, and fatty foods. Beans and lentils, as well as nuts, seeds and legumes, are excellent sources of protein and fiber. Be consistent and avoid getting carried away by food trends that promise magical results.
