A cold sore, also known as fever blisters, is a viral infection caused by HSV or Herpes Simplex Virus. It appears in the form of small blisters on and around your lips. Sometimes, it may appear on the cheeks and nose too. Cold sore symptoms are severe during the first attack. After that, the body develops antibodies, negating the possibility of another attack. Pain medications such as ibuprofen can help reduce the pain and swelling. You can prevent another outbreak, which is likely, by wearing lip balms with SPF, taking plenty of rest, and antiviral medications. When you have cold sores, make sure to practice hygiene so that it does not spread. Avoid kissing or having oral sex when you have blisters or cold sores. Remember not to share towels, creams, razors, and other personal stuff when you suspect a cold sore.
Make sure to visit your doctor if the symptoms are severe and last longer than four weeks. You might require an antiviral injection or medication to clear the infection.
