Cold Sores - Symptoms, Causes, And Medication
A cold sore, also known as fever blisters, is a viral infection caused by HSV or Herpes Simplex Virus. It appears in the form of small blisters on and around your lips. Sometimes, it may appear on the cheeks and nose too. Cold sore symptoms are severe during the first attack. After that, the body develops antibodies, negating the possibility of another attack. Tingling sensation

Fluid-filled blisters

Oozing fluids

Cold sore prescription
Although cold sores disappear within two or four weeks without any treatment, with prescription drugs, it heals quickly. Some of the prescription drugs include acyclovir, penciclovir, and famciclovir. Valtrex is another medication for cold sores available in the form of pills. Other medications are topical creams that can be applied to the sores to reduce the pain and swelling. You can use these creams several times a day to reduce the pain and swelling. However, doctors prescribe antiviral injections in case of severe infections.
You can find over-the-counter medications to reduce the pain and swelling and expedite the healing process. But, it is essential to apply the cream at the first sign or symptom of a cold sore. Pain medications such as ibuprofen can help reduce the pain and swelling. You can prevent another outbreak, which is likely, by wearing lip balms with SPF, taking plenty of rest, and antiviral medications. When you have cold sores, make sure to practice hygiene so that it does not spread. Avoid kissing or having oral sex when you have blisters or cold sores. Remember not to share towels, creams, razors, and other personal stuff when you suspect a cold sore.
Make sure to visit your doctor if the symptoms are severe and last longer than four weeks. You might require an antiviral injection or medication to clear the infection.
