What Is Ro (reverse Osmosis) Water Purifier, And How Does It Work?
Water purifiers come in different types and use different technologies to purify water. Therefore, depending on what you want, there are various choices to choose from as the user. An excellent example is Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifiers. Although used for similar purposes as other water purifiers, an RO water purifier employs a specific technology that makes it different from the rest.
Therefore, before deciding the specific water purifier to settle on, it is essential to understand the specifics and how it works. This is because this information defines the installation method, the quantity of water it can purify, the initial and maintenance cost, and the location where it is to be installed. In this case, we focus on RO water purifiers, which can be purchased from Eco Crystal (https://ecocrystal.in/index.html), and how they purify water.
What is Reverse Osmosis?
One of the water purification technologies adopted is reverse osmosis, which is adopted in the RO water purifier. Specifically, RO involves a process whereby contaminants in water are removed by passing it through a semipermeable membrane. ...
... Therefore, the filtered water is known as permeate, while the left-over water after purification is known as brine.
One of the essential aspects of reverse osmosis is the semipermeable membrane, which comprises various features that enable it to complete its role in the process. Specifically, the semipermeable membrane often has small holes that have the ability to allow only water molecules to pass through but block out other molecules belonging to contaminants. This often defines osmosis in the reverse osmosis process.
What is a Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier?
As previously indicated, water purifiers use different technologies to purify water and present clean water for household uses, for example, reverse osmosis. A reverse osmosis water purifier includes a semipermeable membrane that facilitates the purifying process. Initially, osmosis involves a process whereby water becomes more concentrated as it passes through the membrane until an equilibrium is reached.
However, in reverse osmosis, this changes, and instead, through the application of pressure on one side, the semipermeable membrane blocks the contaminants in the water and prevents them from crossing to the lesser concentrated side. Therefore, these water purifiers yield the desired clean water. At Eco Crystal, we present different types of RO water purifiers, including RO Champion-A-J Water Purifier, which has a unique feature of an aluminum body that radiates pump heat, improving the water purifier’s pump performance. This is just an example of the many different RO water purifiers we avail, specifically with different capacities, power consumption, and sizes.
How do RO Water Purifiers work?
Depending on the technology adopted, each water purifier often focuses on one process, and that is, what is passed through it, and unwanted and dangerous materials are removed from the water, presenting the best water for domestic use. In this case, RO water purifiers often use reverse osmosis to purify water, which is passed through a semipermeable membrane. Moreover, this type of water purifier involves about four stages of water purification, through which water is passed, and unwanted substances such as chlorine, salts, and fluoride are removed.
The different stages of water purification involve the use of different filters, each with different functions. Moreover, these filters are often named depending on the These filters include;
• The semipermeable membrane facilitates the removal of about 98% of all the dissolved solids (TDS) in the water.
• Sediment filter, which is tasked with reducing various particles in the water, including dust and rust.
• The carbon filter plays the role of reducing the presence of substances such as chlorine, volatile organic compounds, and substances that make the water have an odor or foul smell.
Specifically, the process follows the following steps:
1. Once the water enters the RO water purifier, it goes through the prefiltration process. The carbon and sediment filter facilitate this process; therefore, the water goes through these filters, and substances such as chlorine and sediment are removed. This is essential since these substances could clog the primary membrane, that is, the semipermeable membrane.
2. Once the water goes through the prefiltration, it then proceeds to the reverse osmosis membrane. In this case, most dissolved particles are filtered out, including those with small particles not visible to the electron microscope.
3. After the filtration process, the water is stored in a storage tank, which is often part of the RO water purifier. Therefore, the water purifier continues with the process until the tank is full, then it shuts. The water remains in the tank until it is needed.
4. While the purified water is in the tank, which is often connected to the faucet, once it is needed, it goes through the faucet but still undergoes further filtration, that is, post-filtration. This filtration ensures that the water is adequately polished and safe for drinking.
