Increasingly, child develop mentalists recognize that considerable caution must be taken to ensure the well being of children when they are involved in a research study. ...
... Today colleges and universities have review boards that evaluate the ethical nature of research conducted at their institutions. Proposed research plans must pass the scrutiny of an ethics research committee before the research can be initiated. In addition, the American Psychological Association (APA) has developed guidelines for its members' ethics.
The code of ethics adopted by the APA instructs researchers to protect their subjects from mental and physical harm. The best interests on the subjects must be kept foremost in the researchers mind All subjects, if they are old enough, must give their informed consent to participate in a research study. This requires that subjects know what their participation will entail and any risks that might develop. For example, subjects in an investigation of the effects of divorce on children should be told beforehand that interview questions might stimulate though about issues they might not anticipate. I he subjects should also be informed that in some instances a discussion of the family's experiences might improve family relationships, but in other instances it might bring up issues that bring the children unwanted stress. After informed consent is given, the subjects reserve the right to withdraw from the study at any time.
Special ethical concerns govern the conduct of research with children. First, if children are to be studied, informed consent from their parents or legal guardians must be obtained. Parents have the right to a complete and accurate description of what will be done with their children and may refuse to let them participate. Second, children have rights too. Psychologists are obliged to explain precisely what the children will experience. The children may refuse to participate, even after parental permission has been given. Also, if a child becomes upset during the research study, it is the psychologist's obligation to calm the child. Third, psychologists must always weigh the potential for harming children against the prospects of contributing some clear benefits to them. If there is the chance of harm — as when drugs are used, social deception takes place, or children are treated aversely (that is, punished or reprimanded) — psychologists must convince a group of peers that the benefits of the experience clearly outweigh any chance of harm. Fourth, since children are in a vulnerable position and lack power and control when facing adults, psychologists should always strive to make a professional encounter a positive and supportive experience.
