Is There a Tea That Helps Bloating?
Anyone who's ever had a bloated stomach knows how uncomfortable that feeling is. Having a full, tight belly that is sometimes coupled with abdominal pain. There are a variety of things that can cause bloating, but it's almost always the result of trapped gas that hasn't been able to pass through via flatulence or belching.
Some of these causes are eating fatty foods, eating too fast, smoking, anxiety, and stress can all be the root cause of bloating. However, the best way to beat the bloat is to avoid the known culprits in the first place, but once it's too late, finding a good tea for bloating is going to be your saving grace. Here are some of the best teas for bloating:
1. Ginger Tea: Since the time of the Ancient Greeks, ginger has been used to help with digestive issues. It contains several active ingredients, including the very pungent compounds called gingerols and shogaols, these naturally help soothe the digestive tract, making gas, bloating, and cramps less likely. Ginger also thins the blood and improves circulation, which helps alleviate bloating, as well. Please ...
... note, if you're already on a blood-thinning medication, speak to your doctor before using ginger.
2. Hibiscus Tea: In 2013 a study from the University of Arizona found that hibiscus has specific flavonoid compounds in it to help regulate aldosterone, which is the hormone responsible for regulating the absorption or release of water in the kidneys. In other words, it can help decrease bloating and water retention.
3. Dandelion Tea: This is made from the root and leaves of spring's ever-present annoying weed. Dandelion tea, which is chock full of vitamins A, C, and D, packs very impressive diuretic properties. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that after two doses of dandelion tea, participants showed a significant increase in frequency of urination, and in turn, bloating subsided. Also, unlike prescription anti-bloat medications, dandelion is high in potassium, so lost electrolytes are quickly replenished. Please note, Dandelion tea can also have a mild laxative effect, as well.
4. Peppermint Tea: In traditional medicine, peppermint is widely recognized for helping soothe digestive issues. It has a cool, refreshing flavor. Some animal research studies suggest that plant compounds called flavonoids found in peppermint may inhibit the activity of mast cells. These are immune system cells that are abundant in your gut and sometimes contribute to bloating. Other animal studies also show that peppermint relaxes the gut, which may relieve intestinal spasms, as well as the bloating and pain that can accompany them.
5. Fennel Tea: The seeds of fennel are used to make tea and the taste is similar to licorice. Fennel has traditionally been used for digestive disorders, including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and constipation. Constipation is another contributing factor in some cases of bloating. Therefore, relieving sluggish bowel, may also resolve bloating. When nursing-home residents with chronic constipation drank 1 daily serving of an herbal tea blend made with fennel seeds, they had an average of 4 more bowel movements over 28 days than those who drank a placebo.
