Design of the spherical plain bearing:
This radial plain bearing includes the two rings covering each other. The other ring has the sphered concave inner surface. The inner ring has a sphered convex outer surface. These concave and convex surfaces fit onto each other and slide efficiently over each other. These bearings are suitable for aligning the shaft within the inner ring and allowing the oscillating, recurrent tilting, or slewing movements. These bearings are used when slow sliding speeds are required.
The material used for designing the plain bearing:
Different materials can be used to design the plain bearing. The material selected should be tough, hard, and durable as these plain surfaces come in constant contact with each other thus allowing friction between the two surfaces. The different materials suitable for making these plain bearings include :
Hardened carbon chromium steel, carbon steel, copper alloy, etc.
Incorporation of molybdenum disulfide, bronze liner, or hard chromium plating on the surface of the metal allows reducing the wearing due to friction.
Phosphate coating of the surface helps in increasing the resistance to corrosion.
Use of PTFE composite, PTFE plastic, or PTFE fabric help in decreasing the wear and tear at the friction surface.
