Interesting Things About Christmas
The vast majority Christians these days recognize Christmas. Really, some individuals who are Muslim celebrate Christmas! Though, a small number of people are aware of all of the interesting facts surrounding this world renowned holiday.
For instance, were you aware that coming across a spider web on Christmas morning is thought to be a predictor of good tidings in the Ukraine? Or that the thought of kissing under the mistletoe originates in Scandinavia? What about the concept that hiding stuff in Christmas pudding came from the middle ages? There are tons of such interesting information very few people is aware of these days. Let's break down some particularly interesting areas.
Where It Started
While Christmas is today considered to be a celebration of the coming of Christ into this world, a similar holiday was celebrated at the same time well before his birth. The period around December 25th also represents the winter solstice, which was marked in ancient Rome with other winter celebrations. So many people enjoy Christmas pudding, and this dates back a very long time to when people used to eat spiced porridge. How about Buche de Noel, a a well known traditional Christmas cake? As you are no doubt familiar, this cake comes from in France and the term means "Christmas log". Of course many people in the english speaking world call this a Yule Log. It is usually a rolled sponge cake, filled with Marzipan or meringue. This dates back to medieval times.
What about candy canes? Were you aware that sugar was super expensive many years ago? Because of that, candy was only eaten on very special occasions such as Christmas. That's how the practice of enjoying candy canes at Christmas originated. Additionally people ate sugar around lent way back during the time of Jesus, because sugar was known to have medicinal uses. I bet you didn't know that little known fact.
How about Christmas cookies? Well, these have been a part of holidays going back way before the bit of Christ. Cookies have been enjoyed for hundreds of years, and they have been eaten around the end of December since the 1500's. And did you know, they were loved in America in the 1600's!
So there are a precious few interesting bits about the Christmas holiday. There are many more dealing with the celebration, trees, ornaments, edible items, Christmas songs, and more. Look around a little, and tell your friends and family with these really interesting facts.
