The story of the Italian marble industry is just one of many chapters as it has been through many years of expansion and turbulent shifts. The industry of marble is traced back beginning in when it was part of the Roman Empire, where Carrara Marble was the preferred stone preferred by the Roman Empire. Today, Carrara Marble is the most frequently utilized Italian marble. The first building built and paid for by State in total marble was "Temple of Jupiter Stator" which was a temple dedicated to the god Jupiter, a Roman god in the year 146 B.C
Marble was utilized at different places throughout the empire with local marbles and stones being used in accordance with the area and the size of the undertaking. This was mainly due to the cost of labor and time to transport this marble throughout the Empire.

There was a challenge for Italians to create a massive international trade in Stone. Due to the labor intensive extraction process the process dates back to the time when Romans utilized their manpower to extract the stone efficiently. The most significant change in the quarrying of stone was the advent of the diamond chainsaw and wire cutter. Along with the creation of railways, roads along with other network of roads and infrastructure which allowed the marble to be easily transported, and hence the beginning of the current dominating Italian manufacturing of marble.
