What are Professional Engineers Ontario license requirements?
The following are the PEO license requirements that you have to satisfy to work as an engineer in Ontario:
You must be 18 years old at least.
You must have spotless character.
You have to fulfill the academic requirements: you must have a bachelor’s degree with an engineering program. The program has to be officially approved by Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board also known as CEAB or equal academic qualifications.
In case of having your engineering program is not approved by CEAB, then PEO will evaluate the academic background to make sure that it is equal to the academic qualification is the engineering discipline.
You need to pass the National Professional Exam.
Fulfill the experience requirements: As per Ontario law, you are required to have 4 years of engineering work experience to get the license for professional engineering by clearing this competency-based assessment.
A minimum of 1-year work experience has to be within Canadian jurisdiction. it means that you have sufficient experience and exposure to Canadian engineering ethics, technical criteria, legislation and official rules.
The following are the five quality standards on which PEO assesses a candidate’s engineering experience:
1. Practical experience
2. Application of theory
3. Engineering management
4. Being aware of the social effects of engineering.
5. Communication skills.
It is to be taken into consideration that you have to show at least 48-month of engineering experience that can be easily verified and accepted. This is the experience gained after completing your undergraduate engineering degree.
What is the Professional Engineers Ontario admission/ licensing process?
The following is the PEO licensing or admission process:
1.You need to fulfill the given academic requirements.
2.You have to successfully complete the National Professional Practice also called NPPE.
3.You have to satisfy PEO’s work experience requirements, which is of 48 months.
Academic document requirements:
Candidates having a degree from in CEAB-approved program:
The applicant with having his undergraduate engineering degrees awarded by a university of Canada and the approved program by CEAB are considered capable of fulfilling PEO’s academic needs. Such applicants need degree proof in the form of a transcript copy of the diploma.
While the candidates with a bachelor’s degree from a NON-CEAB-approved program need copies of diplomas, transcripts, certificates and degrees, along with the license application. Such copies of academic documents must be in two languages, original and English. If they are not in English, you must English translations. It should be done either by a certified member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario or a professional engineer of Canada. It must be certified that you are fluent in both languages.
Costs in becoming licensed:
1.National Professional Practice Exam fee ($225.50).
2.Application fee ($360 + HST), which makes a total of $406. 80.
3.In what things, a technical examination application has to pay:
•First examination and a one-time administration fee ($700).
•each subsequent exam ($200)
•Submission of an engineering report ($360).
4.Final licensing/registration fee ($300 + HST), which makes $339. Candidates are invoiced for this fee upon licensing.
5.For remaining licensed, one needs to pay yearly dues of $265+HST, which makes a total of $299.45.
You need to keep in mind that all these are non-refundable. It’s wise to make sure that all documents for the support of the application are submitted to Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). In case of incomplete submissions, the submissions are returned to the candidate.
