People have preferences regarding food, fashions, styles – also fabrics. For some, it matters little what fabrics their clothes and curtains are made of, or their bed linen and tablecloths and napkins, but for others, it is important that they choose a fabric that suits them better than another.

Linen, harvested from European flax linen is an example of a fabric that is constantly being talked about these days. It is not new, even though its popularity outside Europe is quite recent. It has been known for many years around the Mediterranean and further out, and reports of the fabric having been developed into a good industry in countries such as Egypt a long time ago suggest that it has served communities for many years. Even their Pharaoh Tutankhamun was buried wrapped in linen. Of course, Egypt is one country only.

Linen has long been found in India and the East too, and these days all over the globe. As a choice fabric, it is known to be more expensive than many others, which is not hard to explain why. Firstly, because there is the geographical limitation that it grows only in parts of western Europe, it ...
... makes sense that it has to be exported to different destinations – after having been grown and harvested laboriously and then exposed to time-consuming processes known as ‘retting’, ‘scutching’ and ‘hackling’, all referring to how the soft flax fibers are harvested from its plant before weaving can start to finally come up with the ready fabric. Then it still has to be exported to its destination. And, of course, linen offers qualities that not every other fabric is known for, and will, therefore, be in greater demand than many others.

Some of these qualities and features include its specific wrinkled look which is favored by many for being fashionable as the fabric is so easily discerned from any other, it does not need ironing (although you can do that if you want to) before being put away or simply being put back on the bed where linen is popular as sheets, pillowcases, and duvets.

The fabric is easy to clean: a machine wash is all that is needed – simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions as to what soaps and detergents to use for your linen to last for a long time.

Other benefits and advantages of linen over some other fabrics are its breathability and the fact that it keeps bed linen and clothes cooler in hot, humid temperatures, and warmer when it is cold. The effect is that it absorbs moisture more easily and evaporates the same before it starts feeling damp – a real irritation in humid weather!

The fact that it helps regulate temperature is a sure plus for many, and part of its growing popularity in many parts of the world. Linen is a strong fabric, outlasting many others such as cotton, which is a popular choice for bed linen and clothes – and curtains - too. Also, while it lasts so long, it remains in great condition too for many years, making its appeal even stronger as it stays beautiful, keeps its colors and hues thereof, and is, therefore, a great choice for the person that demands quality.

The fabric is also mentioned for its well-documented qualities to keep bacteria and fungus out and to help make sure that it acts as a natural insect repellent. The above are some examples of why the fabric has become so popular in recent times and why it is a popular choice for so many – even with a slightly higher price tag than some others.

Linen is seen everywhere in the home: in the bedroom, in the dining room, the curtains in your lounge – some clothes you may be wearing. As its allure grows, it is almost certain that the fabric will be used more and more as time goes by.
