The Importance Of English Medium Education In India
Education is believed to be the stepping stone of an individual’s success in the modern world. People coming from different walks of life can dare to dream a life of aspirations when they imagine education as the ladder to climb up with. Education helped many freedom fighters to challenge the British power before independence and has helped in the rise of the Indian middle-class post-independence. The British enslaved us with their culture and supremacy. English too, partly remained a way for them to keep us enslaved. However, we simply can not rule out the importance of studying English just because it remains a foreigner’s language.
English began to be taught in India during the nineteenth century. Thomas Babington Macaulay’s famous Minute laid down the importance of introducing the Indian masses to European Literature. Macaulay’s attitude, while laying down these suggestions, was that of an ignorant white supremacist. We Indians, who hold our cultural heritage close to our hearts, can not simply accept Macaulay’s insult of the achievements of Indian texts. However, even reformists such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy ...
... understood the importance of the introduction of English education for the Indian masses as it was a vehicle through which Indians could travel from the darkness of age-old orthodoxy towards the light of the modern world.
From the Nineteenth-century itself Indians began creating literature in English. With the introduction of the printing press, many English newspapers and pamphlets came up. Indians did not let English remain for them a language of subjugation but used it to their own advantage. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, used English as a medium to challenge the British authorities. It was the language that could help people from different states to come together and fight against the colonial power.
In post-independence India, there are often debates against English being adopted by the coming generations as a medium for communication. We Indians have to be very smart about this. Of course, we cannot let our regional languages die gradually. However, we can not abandon English as a medium in a world of rampant globalisation. The internet has brought us all so close that we can connect to anyone in any corner of the earth. This has opened endless career and business prospects for Indians. International companies readily hire people who can converse in English as it remains the most widely spoken global language. Therefore, we must make sure that we recognise the importance of learning English as a second language, keeping in mind to uphold our mother tongue.
