Identifying Flu Symptoms In Children

There is nothing more contagious than the flu. This virus is spread through the air and through direct contact with anything an infected person may have touched. When it comes to identifying flu symptoms in children, time is a huge factor. When a child becomes infected with the flu virus, the incubation is a lot shorter than it is for adults, usually within two to three days of exposure, and it attacks the upper respiratory system first. The race is then on to find the best flu medication for children, and fast.
Fever is the first of many flu symptoms in children to be identified, and it will most likely be the symptom that will make you realize that your child has the flu. This fever usually presents itself as what is known as high grade, somewhere around 100 to 104 degrees. This high a fever can be quite dangerous, especially in small children, and cannot always be broken easily, not even by the best flu medication.
The fever will be followed by chills and muscle aches, and is best treated with an alcohol bath or a homeopathic herbal bath, rather than any of the best flu medication available. Fevers can be one ...
... of the more risky flu symptoms in children, and acetaminophen may not act fast enough to break it. An herbal bath containing eucalyptus and peppermint will work faster and will bring the fever down quickly.
The other flu symptoms in children, headaches, sore throats, and coughing, will generally last for three to four days, but coughs may linger for up to two weeks, even after the rest of the symptoms have faded. In younger children, especially those under the age of 5, may appear to be symptoms of other diseases like croup, bronchitis or pneumonia, and should be referred to a physician for treatment instead of treating them with the best flu medication available.
Extreme flu symptoms in children include abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and the child should be seen by a doctor as a precaution before treating them with anything at all. Flu in infants is often very hard to determine, but the most common symptoms include lethargy, lack of appetite and poor circulation.
Because it is so difficult to determine exactly what your child may have when they get sick, especially younger children who cannot always tell us what is happening, it can be a tough decision as to when to take the child to the doctor, rather than treat the child with the best flu medication. At best, if your child shows any of the following symptoms, it is recommended to have your child see a doctor as soon as possible:
Fever continues after three days.
Nasal discharge for more than 10 days.
Discharge coming from the eyes.
Take your child to the hospital if she or she has these symptoms:
Difficulty breathing even after nasal suction.
Does not cry or make eye contact.
Listless or lethargic.
Not taking in fluids.
Persistent or severe vomiting.
Unbreakable fever after baths.
A sick child can drive you to distraction, and since a lot of the same symptoms may appear, no matter the reason, it helps to be able to recognize and treat flu symptoms early on because it can be so dangerous for the child if you delay treatment. By looking for these common symptoms, you may be able to help your child break the flu's grip, and stave off potential complications later.
