Scars of any type can make people feel self-conscious to the point that they are reluctant to go out in public. In previous years, the only way to remove scars was through invasive, costly procedures, including dermabrasion and surgery. Even so, these methods of scar removal were not even guaranteed to work. There are many products on the market today that scar sufferers can use at home, but silicone scar treatments are the only clinically-proven method of reducing scar appearance. Silicone scar treatments work by reducing redness and discoloration, as well as restoring the natural texture of the skin.

If you suffer from scars, InvisiScar™ might be an option to consider for removing them. Soft tissue scars are often caused by major trauma to the skin; superficial injuries usually heal without scarring over as long as you don’t pick at the wound or the wound does not become infected. For more serious injuries, scars do develop as a way to mend the skin back together.

In surgery, for example, surgical tools cut deeply into the skin, and several layers are usually penetrated: skin, fatty ...
... tissue, soft tissue, and sometimes even muscle. When the skin repairs itself and scar tissue forms, the soft tissue under the skin can come together unevenly, resulting in jagged and raised edges where the incision occurred. For scars caused by incisions, there are silicone sheets available in varying lengths to cover a surgical scar effectively. Most of these sheets are 2-4 inches wide, and they can be up to 12 inches in length. For maximum effectiveness, the silicone sheet should cover ¼ to ½ inch of skin past each edge of the scar.

Another way that these scars can form is by scratching or picking at a wound while the wound is in the process of healing. Chicken pox and acne marks typically clear up without scarring, but if they are picked at, they can become infected and/or scar over. For these facial scars, there are a few silicone sheet options to choose from. There are silicone disks, which are 1.6 inches in diameter, and rectangular sheets up to 4 inches long. These sheets have rounded edges that make it easier for them to adhere to the face.

Silicone scar treatments are actually recommended by many doctors as a home remedy for scar removal; however, if you are undergoing something as serious as surgery, you will want to check with your doctor regularly so he or she can see how your incision is healing. Once your wound is fully healed, you can begin the silicone scar treatment. Starting before the wound has had a chance to heal can lead to complications, including infection, so it’s vital to have a doctor monitor it and let you know when you can start treating it yourself.

Overall, many wounds can clear up on their own if the healing process is not hampered by infection or picking at the wound. However, if interference occurs or the injury itself is serious enough to cause scarring, silicone scar treatments are safe, inexpensive, and effective ways to reduce the appearance of scars.
