Food Product Development in India

Food Product Development in India has seen numerous changes and advancements over the last few years. The past few decades have seen a drastic change in the way the Indian food industry operates, what it offers to its consumers as well as how the government and private sector are working together to promote and regulate the industry. The government is trying to promote a healthier lifestyle by introducing many new and improved food products to the market. With globalization and liberalization happen extensively across the world, the food industry too has responded to the same and is trying to improve the quality of its products and promote better nutrition. The above mentioned developments have seen many new food products being introduced and developed in the market.

India is witnessing food product development in the agricultural sector the most. The recent studies show that about 45 percent of the new food production in the country is related to the agricultural sector. The primary reason behind this ...
... phenomenon is that there are enough opportunities for the farmers to increase the production of the various crops like rice, wheat, corn etc. at a much higher yield and profit margin. The increasing demand for food products from the ever-growing middle class consumers have also increased the production and made it possible to feed the entire population with this food. However, the government has to play its role and ensure that the local resources are used efficiently and fully.

Another major change that has taken place in the food product development in India is the movement towards organic farming techniques and products. There is a rising concern over the deteriorating food product hygiene standards around the globe, hence people are looking for safer and more hygienic ways to cook and consume food. Many food products manufacturers are adopting organic food production methods and are using natural fertilizers and pesticides to produce healthy and safe food products. They feel that investing in such methods would ensure that the food is more nutritious and free from any harmful chemicals.

The food industry in India has also seen a lot of improvement in the last few years. With the liberalization policies implemented by the Indian government, the food industry has started adopting improved processing techniques and improved hygienic methods to ensure the production of quality food items. Some of the areas that have seen the greatest development are: fruit and vegetable, poultry and animal, egg and poultry, fish and seafood, dairy products and processed food. These sectors require an innovative mindset and a complete reformulation of the policies to be able to sustain themselves and attract the foreign investors.

In terms of business development, the food product development in India can be categorized into five sectors: Fresh, Salads, Coffee, Tea and Flavors, Pickles and Desserts, Fruits and Vegetables. This sector will continue to experience rapid growth and competition as more people eat more healthily. There is a massive potential in the sectors of food product manufacturing and processing. The government has been instrumental in the development of many small scale cottage industries in the rural areas to supply local demand. The main objective is to improve the living standards and standard of the people.

To promote and commercialize the food product development in India, various seminars, workshops, fairs, seminars etc. are conducted throughout the year to share information and introduce the business concepts to the rural population. The food manufacturing companies use various media like the internet, social networking sites, tele-letters to disseminate information about their products and services to the prospective customers. They also organize events such as fairs to display and sell their products. The success of any food product development in India depends on the efforts of the stakeholders - the initiators, suppliers, processors, entrepreneurs and the customers.
