The concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by our activities has been increasing for the last many decades. Compiling all these emissions from one particular operation could be an individual, a company, an event or a product is what we call a carbon footprint in order to measure the carbon footprint both from direct and indirect sources. These gases include methane, nitrogen oxide, perfluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, above all the carbon dioxide as the most important contributor to global warming and climate change since industrialization. As a carbon footprint consultant, we have helped many companies estimate the emissions from the above-mentioned gases for their operations.

The world meteorological organization has mentioned that the last few years have shown record-high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as compared to the years before.

In order to assist an individual carbon footprint, we first understand what it is?
A personal carbon footprint is the quantity of greenhouse gases released as a result of our transportation, consumption of food, disposal of waste, consumption of electricity and water and every other activity that we do, which results in the emission of greenhouse gases. Based on certain assumptions, many sources have estimated that about a total of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions occurs from each individual globally.

The emissions per person are highest in the United States and are considered up to 4 times of normal average emissions from people across the globe. This is because of the lifestyle in the US, which is highly energy-intensive and materialistic. It is said that we all should reduce our carbon footprint to less than 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year by the end of 2050 if we want to limit our global warming to under 2 degrees centigrade. Many companies, organizations have come together and have set targets to reduce these emissions so that this target can be achieved. Being a carbon footprint consultant, we are working with several companies to set emission reduction targets and develop benchmarks for them.

The integration of renewable energy into our electricity source is one of the most efficient and quick ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally.

The proportion of renewable energy has been going up in most of the countries around the globe; however, it has not yet reached the quantum which can be called satisfactory. These renewable energy sources include solar power, wind power, hydropower, and geothermal energy. Many companies are also working towards reducing their organic waste, as this waste ends in landfills releases the methane gas. In our role as carbon footprint consultant, we have helped companies establish mechanisms to capture this methane and either flare it for energy usage.

Transportation is also another sector which needs to be worked upon, nowadays we are hearing a lot about electric vehicles. If the electric vehicle becomes abundant in number and their charging stations are running on solar, then it will have a great impact on carbon emissions.
