The New Yankee Stadium Has Its Fight
Before a crowd of over 50,000 people at Cowboys Stadium, Manny Pacquiao obliterated Joshua Clottey in a fight that took place back in March. So then, what did Pacquiao think about the similarly rowdy atmosphere of the Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman fight at the Yankee Stadium on Saturday? When asked, he called the responded by attributing the lively atmosphere with being really god for boxing.
However, he didn't seem quite as approving of was the continued speculation surrounding his potential tangle with Floyd Mayweather Jr and claimed that if Mayweather doesn't want to fight, that he isn't going to put the pressure on any further.
Among other celebrities ready to take in the evening's events, Brandon Jacobs, a running back for the Giants showed up in time to take in the energy of the new Yankee Stadium as it prepared itself to host its first major fight since Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton back in 1976. When asked what he felt about taking part in this historic event, he marveled about the new stadium and admitted he needed to be a part of the event.
As he took in his surroundings, he was easily able to ...
... recall a boxing career of his own as an amateur in Louisiana. He currently manages some boxers and expressed how much he loves boxing and that he is just trying to get boxing to love him back. Out of 37 fights he had only two losses in his amateur career and admits that fighting at Yankee Stadium would have been a dream come true for him next to fighting at Turner Field in Atlanta.
However, Brooklyn boxer Paulie Malignaggi begged to differ about Turner Field and settled quite nicely for where the Bombers accomplished their 27th world title in the fall. Celebrity bodyguard Chuck Zito agreed that fighting in a stadium this packed is what boxing is all about.
The Saturday night fight sparked plenty of memories for Zito as his father was also a fighter who had battled it out at the old Stadium and as a result, Charles Jr. became quite close with both Arthur Mercante Sr. and Jr. In addition to already being a Yankee fan, Zito and many others were filled with nostalgia and excitement for the fight to come at the new Yankee Stadium. Fueled by the contagious excitement from the other fans ready for the evenings events, Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foremen then stepped into the ring and with that, into history.
