Any athlete, sportsperson or individual that enjoys outdoor activities, knows that maximum joy comes from being prepared, whether that refers to the t-shirt and running shoes you are wearing, or whether it refers to your favourite mountain bike.

Biking off-road, which is the discipline that requires a mountain bike, is a discipline with its specific requirements in terms of issues such as handling weather conditions, certainly the terrain where one venture, as well as the type of bike you use. Not everybody rides off-road because they prepare for, or take part in, a competition. Most riders probably do it as a hobby on weekends or when they have some free time, in other words for fun, maybe to stay fit and test their skill and ability only against themselves.

The more serious rider, the one that enjoys competing, may well have different needs and requirements and will, therefore, require a different bike. Fortunately for all, there is a bike that suits, no matter whether you want one with an aluminium frame, or one with, say carbon fibre. A lot depends on issues such as weight and being able to handle the bike, ...
... as well as budget and price.

Some bikes are more expensive than others and maybe right for the person that takes mountain biking more seriously than their neighbours and friends. They are happy to pay – even much – more than the one that is more relaxed about their biking. When it comes to these issues, the frame is often discussed first as this component can be expensive – or more affordable for the person that is happy with a good bike that they do not pay a lot for.

Individuals that buy a mountain bike will look at all those issues that may influence their choice and decision. For instance, the astute buyer will want to find the best balance when looking at issues such as weight (with the lighter weight the option for most), performance and for many also price when they go out to buy – or replace – a mountain bike.

The main choices these days are between aluminium and carbon fibre bikes, with the latter being the more expensive option. When aluminium was first introduced to the market, it certainly was the preferred, even ‘wonder’ frame material for most. But nothing stays the same: in recent times the carbon fibre frame has become the choice for many; however, some will point out that the aluminium frame performs equally well – and in terms of budget/price it is certainly a much more attractive option.

Many marketers may indeed opt for selling the newer carbon fibre bikes, even though they may be more expensive. But many astute riders and buyers do not necessarily opt for the carbon fibre in favour of aluminium, especially if they are not competing. Aluminium is by no means all that much heavier, and it certainly is cheaper. There are some truly great aluminium bikes out there, whether new or second hand.

This does not mean that carbon fibre is not an attractive option – by no means. It is the preference for those that are happy to pay more, and it will always have the edge in terms of weight. It is also a fact that the carbon fibre frame is stronger than the aluminium option; it can absorb great loads when you jump, for example. Aluminium, on the other hand, is known to be better at durability upon impact; it will resist impact better.

Another difference between the two choices is that the carbon fibre may be lighter on the climb, which speaks for itself. Most of these issues, in the end, have to do with preference – and price. Fortunately, buyers have options, and enough dealers to visit, also when you want a reliable second-hand mountain bike.
