If you have been to a place that serves authentic Asian dishes, you already to know that the food is to die for. The flavours, the ingredients, the cooking style – all if it is impeccable. Whether the eatery is a fine dine restaurant or one that serves the best delicacies from the streets in all their rustic glory, the food always packs a punch of flavours. While some people may be just fine with substituting dim sums with momos at home, they never really are the same. The ambience, cutlery and servers also play a role in turning this meal into a full-blown experience. With mandarin letters, pictures of Buddha, chopsticks and waiters that greet you in the native language, your dinner is bound to feel special. However, if you are new to the cuisine, reading the menu may confuse you all the more. Here’s is a list of things that you must try -
Dim sums
If you love a good pan fried momo, you must try its close cousin – the dim sum. With a similar appearance and cooking style, the difference is quite low. These dim sums look inviting when their outer cover is almost transparent ...
... and you can see the filling through it. Usually steamed to perfection, they can also be pan-fried for a change in texture. Stuffed with a mix of vegetables, paneer, meat or any other ingredient of choice, these are like clouds that just melt in your mouth. Served with a dipping sauce, you just cannot miss out on this dish.
Chicken dumplings in soup
Dumplings are the maternal cousins of the momo and paternal ones of the dim sums. With a concept that is just the same – filling wrapped in a sheet of flour – these are delicious when served in a broth. One of the most common variants is chicken dumplings served in a delicious flavourful broth. This is comfort food for several Asians across the world – and if so, many people swear by it, there has to be something special, right? If you are a vegetarian, you could also have dumpling soup made with paneer dumplings in a veg broth.
Sushi
Sushi is essentially made with rice and seafood which is usually raw, and vegetables. While styles of presenting this dish can vary, each of them uses rice known as sumeshi, shari or simply ‘sushi rice’. This has sugar, salt and vinegar and is pressed out on a nori sheet (seaweed) or outside a nori sheet. This is assembled much like a burrito, with your seafood, or vegetables going in the centre some sauce or flavouring like cream cheese after which the laid-out ingredients are rolled together and cut into pieces. Served with wasabi, pink ginger and soy sauce, it’s these accompaniments that make this dish unmissable.
Baos
Baos or baozis are China’s favourite breakfast food and evening snack. It is a steamed bun stuffed with savoury or sweet filling, which usually includes, meat, seafood, protein and vegetables. The char siu is the most popular type of the many. It is shaped in a flat disc which is folded to make a pocket and the filling is stuffed inside.
Pan-fried noodles
Pad thai, rice, flat ones, soba, hakka – the options of noodles in an Asian restaurant are endless. Pan-fried noodles are a whole different ball game though. The crunch and the chewiness it brings to the dish will make your mouth water. These are hakka or similar noodles which are boiled and then cooked on a hot pan with some oil until parts of them turn golden brown. Teamed with a sauce like black bean or chilli garlic, this one makes for a perfect main dish that satiates your hunger and love for Asian food.
