In 1989, while working at CERN, Tim Berners-Lee suggested the creation of a global hypertext project that would later become the World Wide Web. The first website went live in November 1992. It was a text based website. In 1994 the number increased to 2,738. In the same year Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com and the rest is history. Mobile friendly AKA responsive web design started in 2004. In 2008, there were various ideas on how to create a flexible, fluid site layout.

When the concept of the Internet was first introduced, IT departments created and maintained most of the websites due to the complexity of programming.
