Neck And Upper Back Pain
There is a reason the phrase "pain in the neck" is used to describe undesirable situations. If you or someone you know has experienced neck or upper back pain, you can sympathize with how much of an impact it has on everyday tasks that should be simple to complete. From labor intensive tasks such lifting objects to everyday things like gardening to something as simple as going to sleep-all aspects of your life are harder when you have back and/or neck pain.
Chances are, if you have not experienced this back and neck pain yourself, you know someone very close to you who has. In fact, it has been said that back pain is one of the most common complaints reported to US doctors. According to one study, over six million cases of back or neck pain are reported annually-and these are only the reported cases. A major cause of this pain is poor posture. This makes sense, as more and more jobs require employees to be tied to a desk and computer for long hours, making it hard for workers to maintain proper posture the whole time. On top of this, many people are not educated on proper posture in the first place, and are left to learn ...
... on their own while struggling to break old habits. Back and neck pain caused by incorrect posture usually manifests itself over longer periods of time, so sudden symptoms need to be examined further to determine an alternate cause. Another form of neck and upper back pain that has been known to develop over time is pain caused by stress. Most people carry their stress in their neck and shoulders, causing a lot of pain when this tension builds up over time. In addition, if someones stress is work-induced, they are most likely not only experiencing the pain of stress injury, but also pain caused by working long hours with poor posture. It becomes a vicious cycle. Many times, these forms of pain can be cured by correcting your old habits, practicing stress reduction techniques such as concentrated breathing and yoga, as well as by getting regular massages.
Acute back and neck pain is in a category of its own. Acute pain is set apart by symptoms that occur suddenly, usually as a result of a specific injury. If not treated promptly, these symptoms can persist for long amounts of time, so it is best to check with a physician if you believe your injury to be anything less than a minor injury, or if the pain continues for more than a month. A few different types of injuries that will result in acute neck and upper back pain are herniated disk(s), sprains or fractures of the neck or back, and scoliosis. Neck pain can also be a result of whiplash, which is a sudden change of direction or cessation of motion. These injuries are common in contact sports and can also be a result of an automotive injury. Rarely are any of these causes life threatening, but to reduce the pain and come up with a long term solution for a cure, it is always best to consult a physician about your pain.
