Safaris have been romanticized in films and have been a part of most veteran travellers' itinerary for many years. The Masai Mara in Kenya is undoubtedly the world's most popular safari destination and it has always fulfilled its promise of adventure and romance.

The charm of the Masai Mara goes much beyond the viewing of animals in their natural habitat. The animals are beautiful and they have an amazing capacity to ignore the human beings who descend on them and peer at them unabashedly. Where else in the world can you watch a cheetah sitting on the roof of your safari jeep, while you wait for him to finish sunning himself. Can you think of any other place where you can watch wildlife while you sit outside your lodge having an early breakfast?

Most travellers to the Masai Mara Reserve speak of the wildebeest migration as the most astonishing sight they have ever seen. An annual migration of the wildebeest from Tanzania in July or sometimes in August, and their return from Kenya in October can leave you spellbound. Population density is a term which suddenly seems to make a lot more sense after this.

The ...
... open skies, the beauty of the natural reserve and above all the culture of the Masai people are among many other reasons why a holiday in the Masai Mara Reserve can be one of the most unforgettable voyages you will ever make.

Located in south-west Kenya, the Masai Mara is a reserve inhabited by the Masai people and run by their local county councils. There are strict rules on how many people can visit the reserved areas and there are also very tough laws against poaching. The character of the reserved areas has been maintained and there has been very little encroachment by western "civilization" on the whole. The safari tours are organised and conducted by guides who have spent years training for this, and whose knowledge and concern for the environment is part of their culture and training.

Accommodation in the Masai Mara ranges from the very luxurious camps to the budget lodges and camps. They have places which cater for every budget and for every type of tourist, and you are sure to find something that suits your taste, as long as you make sure that you plan well in advance.

The lodges in the Masai Mara are very popular places for the tourists to stay in. Each lodge is furnished with all the amenities that you may need and all of them have a veranda from where you can watch the surrounding areas and animals in the comfort of your abode.

Most people however prefer to stay in the tents provided at the safari camps. These tents are the ultimate in luxury, with state of the art bathrooms and all the comforts of a five star hotel. Wooden floors, comfortable furniture, enchanting views and a cool breeze are just a few of the add-ons which makes these camps a sought after tourist hub.

Whether you stay at a Masai Mara lodge or a Masai Mara camp, natural beauty and amazing views will always enrapture you. Above all a realization that God made all creatures equal and beautiful will definitely come in your mind. Written by Michael North, a partner of Leleshwa Camp in the Masai Mara leleshwacamp.com
