The helmet camcorder is a compact digital camera mounted on your helmet, surf-board, bicycle handlebars, motorcycle foot pegs or any gear or tool which you bring with you as you engage in your activities.

The purpose of this action helmet camera is to capture moments on video. Whether you are doing a survey, optical inspection or just having fun, action camera is what you need.

People who use this camera are professionals, hobbyists, amateurs and civilians who want to share with the world what they experienced, or have a souvenir. If you are a nature lover and you want to record the picturesque sceneries during your cross-country trips, you can mount a helmet camcorder on your motorcycle.

Sometimes, helmet cameras are used to shoot videos that are otherwise difficult to capture. Professionals who cover dangerous treks, animals, amphibians and reptiles use a helmet camera for close up video footage.

When you are on one of your vacations like a safari trip, dunes riding, or skydiving, you may find this gadget very useful. Action helmet cameras are designed for capturing video and not still pictures, ...
... so they do not have large pixel counts.

Mostly, the video resolution is delivered somewhere between 640x480 and 769x494, which is enough to create an image that looks good on standard definition TV. It also has plenty of data if you want to do online playback.

These camera recorders do not have zoom lenses, so you have to decide on what kind of view field you want for your helmet camcorders. The field of view offered by most cameras is slightly wider than our human eye. But there are also few that offer a fish-eye-like effect.

The wide angle lens actually has an advantage. You do not need to be careful with aiming the lens. Since it has an extremely wide field of view, you have more chances of getting the shot even if your camera is not aimed at where you thought it was.

However, its drawback is its tendency to look a bit off, if you go too wide. The reason is that we are not use to experiencing the world with a wide angle. In addition, certain wide-angle lenses are really soft around the edges.

Vendors post footage on their websites for you to have an idea on its performance. So you must ascertain whether the camera's field of view and distortion fit your taste.

There are two styles of helmet camcorders. One is all-in-one design, and the other is a two-piece design. The all-in-one cameras have the smallest overall package like a lipstick camera which can be housed in a long tube with a built-in media reader.

The two-piece design, helmet camcorders can also feature a lipstick camera but have to connect through a cable to a separate recording unit. In buying the best camera for you, consider its durability, battery capacities, remote control and microphone.
