There are so many nutritional supplements on the market that it can be quite overwhelming to know either which ones to buy or which ones to put your private label on for profit. Turmeric is a common spice and probably one that you have in your food cupboard right now. It has been around for as long as we can remember and it has been used for years as a health supplement. It is thought to be one of the most effective nutritional supplements on the market today. The reason for this is because turmeric has the active ingredient called curcumin that many believe is excellent for both your brain and your body as a whole.

The layman will simply know turmeric as a staple in the pantry cupboard that many use to color their curry a distinctive shade of yellow. In India, it has been in use for thousands upon thousands of years as both a medicinal herb and a fragrant spice for food. Nowadays, turmeric is becoming a headliner for its medicinal properties all over the world thanks to it containing compounds known as curcuminoids, of which the most important one is curcumin. It is the active ingredient in turmeric and it is ...
... a very powerful antioxidant as well as having impressive anti-inflammatory properties.

The bioactive compound curcumin is the most important reason why turmeric is thought of as such a strong contender in the medicinal field. However, in the regular spice, the curcumin content isn’t all that high. The curcumin content of the turmeric spice in your pantry will usually only be approximately 3%. If you want to gain all the health benefits of curcumin, you will need to be consuming at least 1g per day, which is not exactly possible if you’re simply using turmeric to spice up your dinner. And that is where supplements come in.

Turmeric supplements will usually be in an extract form so that the curcumin level is much higher. However, it is still important to consume your supplement with food as it doesn’t absorb into your bloodstream as easily. Pepper can help with absorption as it enhances your ability to absorb curcumin by about 2000%. The best quality and most effective curcumin supplements will also contain piperine, which is an ingredient in pepper that helps your body’s absorption of curcumin.

The biggest benefit of curcumin is that it is anti-inflammatory. Although inflammation in the body does have positive effects, chronic low-level inflammation can lead to heart disease, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. A curcumin or turmeric supplement can help suppress chronic inflammation. Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant. This means that it can tame the free radicals in the body which can help slow down the effects of aging and even some diseases.

Curcumin is also known to boost the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) hormone in the brain. This can help combat degenerative processes in your brain and is thought to help fight Alzheimer’s and depression among others.

Curcumin also helps to improve the lining of your blood vessels which is why it is thought to be incredibly beneficial in reversing some of the steps involved in heart disease. Heart disease is complicated, but anything that you can do to help reverse the process or even simply slow down an inevitable process is good for your health.

Turmeric is a name known to many and it is a favorite in many a pantry and shopping basket. However, few truly know the far-reaching health benefits of this yellow spice. It is important to remember that most of the health benefits come from the curcumin compound and that is why it is more beneficial to take a turmeric and curcumin supplement than it is to simply add an extra teaspoon of turmeric to your curry pot.
