5 Foods To Binge On This Monsoon
The rain is pattering against the windowpane while you sit snuggled up in your favourite corner with a new book or watch a great show. It seems like a good day already, but there’s something that is missing – a steaming hot plate of food to keep you company. Think about a mixed batch of spicy pakoras. Or delicious fried momos. Come the rain, there are only three things your brain is conditioned to think of – mouth-watering comfort food, lazing around, and romance. If your partner is right there, Netflixing or reading out loud with you, food is the only missing link. While cooking may not be your strong point, googling how to make momos or other easy monsoon recipes is always a good idea. Here are a few quick things you just can’t miss digging into, this monsoon.
Pakoras
Call them pakoras or bhajis, bhajiyas, or whatever you want, you cannot change the fact that they are not just food but a whole emotion in the monsoons. Kanda bhaji, batata vada, tomato bhaji, corn fritters, palak fritters, methi gota, paneer pakora, bread pakora, or anything else of your choice. ...
... Pick up whatever you like, coat it with batter, deep fry and enjoy with some coriander chutney or a cool rainy day.
Momos
This Tibetan or Nepalese delicacy is just perfect for the monsoon. If you are wondering how to make momos, it is fairly easy. The best part is you can stuff them with whatever ingredients you have available – leftover meat, vegetables, paneer, tofu, cheese – absolutely anything you have and like. You can choose to steam these or make fried momos instead. A plate of these is incomplete without a spicy and flavourful dipping sauce. So, once you find a chicken momo recipe, don’t forget to make a tomato and chilli momo chutney or serve some soy sauce with them. People also tend to pan fry these in a sauce of their choice to elevate this simple dish. Go on, get creative and let the house smell like an Asian bistro.
Masala Chai
The dip-dip sachet tea may be low calorie and a healthier version but it just doesn’t make the cut when all you want to do is enjoy the weather with some retro Bollywood songs. That is when the OG masala chai becomes a staple, one that you just cannot skip. You may love coffee or black tea, but masala chai which has been boiled to perfection with just the right spices, sugar, tea, milk and water is a hug in a mug – the best one there can be. And what better than the chai and pakora combination when the rain God’s decision to unleash their fury.
Bhutta
Did you say low calorie? Or gluten-free? Or vegan? Chatpatta too? Bhutta ticks all those boxes along with being easy and yet so flavourful. White or yellow corn, nicely oiled, and then roasted in an oven or cooked on a stovetop is a part of the monsoon must-have menu. Coat it with some salt, red chilli powder, and lemon, and immediately dig into the hot corn cob. If you find it difficult to bite into it and the kernels get stuck in your teeth, the kernels can be separated, boiled and then flavoured as per your liking.
Soup
A warm drink that fills up your stomach and makes for a perfect mid-day snack or meal starter, soup is for the soul in the monsoon and winters. Enjoy a piping hot bowl of tomato soup, clear veg, chicken soup or anything one of your choice. The weather would support a more umami and spicy soup too. So, put on your chef caps, get cooking and then enjoy.
