How The Skill Set Requirement Of The Automotive Sector Is Evolving

The industry is observing a rapid evolution with the advancement in technology. The levels of automation and digitisation have also been progressing gradually in the Indian automotive industry. This further demands not only an upgraded version of the workforce for the future industry, but also a shift in the job responsibilities of the existing workforce. Some of the skills that are expected to be the most relevant in the coming times are outlined below:
#1 Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): With the emphasis on automated technologies in both the production plants and vehicles, the new workforce is expected to be familiar with AI functioning and application. A deeper understanding of machine learning would also be required to operate well in industry subdomains like production, supply chain, R&D and services.
#2 Mechatronics: The future of the automobile industry is likely to be dominated by electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (HVs). This demands for a specialised workforce that has specific computational skills and can handle tasks, such as sensor-making, battery and power management, ...
... electrical motor control, etc. Hence, mechatronic engineering may gain popularity among automotive job seekers.
#3 Data Mining and Analytics: With the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the shortening of the design-to-sales shelf cycle, data mining and analytics would become imperative for organisations. This can help them collate and analyse data collected from different, complex lifecycle stages of a vehicle, i.e. from design and production to sales and service. This would further fuel the demand for a workforce with data mining and analytical skills.
#4 Robotics: Being a technology-driven industry, the usage of robots is not new in the automotive sector, especially in its manufacturing and production units. However, their application is expected to rise further and enter other subdomains like R&D and service. Thus, employers would be looking for professionals with related skills.
#5 Digital: The consumer-behaviour was already observing a shift as they started “experiencing” vehicles online rather than physically visiting a dealership to make a purchase decision. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic further aided this behaviour and more consumers are now performing online research to shortlist vehicles of their choice. Hence, talent specialising in this sector would be required to entertain the future consumers, anytime, anywhere.
Observing the rising need of a skilled workforce in the Indian automotive sector, ASDC (Automotive Skills Development Council) started working in this direction. It is a government recognised council that aims at skilling, upskilling and reskilling the aspiring candidates to reduce the gap between recruiters and job seekers, ultimately making the industry self-sufficient in the skilled workforce. For this purpose, it offers automotive industry certifications to aspirants and prepares them for automotive placements as well. So, if you are already working in this industry or are planning to secure a promising job here, consult the experts at ASDC to upgrade your skill set and survive in this ever-transforming industry.
