How To Make Working Out More Enjoyable

No matter the reason you’re unmotivated by exercise, playing music during a workout can vastly improve the experience. If you’re tired of the same old playlist, there are web-based free radio options that you can try out. In fact, a recent study showed that upbeat music helps give motivation to take on high-intensity workouts and that post-workout enjoyment was higher as well.
In addition, listening to a podcast, “reading” an audiobook or even watching a television show during a stint on the treadmill can make it more fun. Whether it’s radio or a podcast, pick something light that you don’t have to focus much mental capacity on. For instance if you go with an audio book, choose a young adult suspense novel. The plot will be easy to follow, but fast-paced enough to keep you interested while you’re pushing through.
Choose the Workout That’s Best For You
While music can be really helpful, no matter what workout you choose, it is important to choose the right workout for you. Go back to when you evaluated what you need to enjoy a workout. Then, choose one that’s the right fit for you.
If ...
... you don’t like getting your heart rate up, try walking or hiking. If you don’t like getting your heart rate up and you don’t like working out alone, find a friend to hike with you. In most cities, there are meetup groups that enjoy similar hobbies that you can join as well. Join a group that enjoys hiking and meet them on the weekend.
Group Exercise Versus Solo Exercise
Some people need a group to be motivated and some cannot imagine working out in a group. If you have felt unmotivated by going to the gym and working out solo, try an exercise class. Yes, it can be intimidating not to know the movements or any of the people. But many group classes are welcoming and the individuals taking them all started at the beginning too. And if the class you join isn’t welcoming, don’t be deterred. Simply pick a different class.
If you aren’t motivated by working out with a group, then don’t! Put on your headphones and workout solo. Again, having one or two friends to keep you motivated to workout regularly can help. You can also join an online challenge, if you need motivation but don’t want to be around people. Try a virtual marathon to get you running, or a virtual activity challenge to get you moving. Many office health benefit plans offer these regularly, so look into yours and see if you can get involved.
Reward Yourself
Finally, if you are working towards a goal, reward yourself when you get there. This will help keep you motivated and give you something to look forward to at the end of a workout. A reward could be anything from new gym clothes, to keep you motivated to keep working out, to a spa visit. Give yourself something you’ll really enjoy!
No matter how you do it, it’s important to be active regularly. Find what works best for you and get moving!
