What Causes Tmj Syndrome?
The majority of the population is affected by the temporomandibular joint disorder, which happens when both sides of the patient's mouth surrounding the jaw area begin to hurt. Pain during chewing, as well as stiffness or tightness when trying to speak, are examples of this type of discomfort. TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors, and it all depends on the individual. Most TMJ patients are unaware that they have the disease for many years before they discover it. Furthermore, most patients are only aware of their condition until jaw discomfort develops. Headaches, dizziness, earaches, shoulder discomfort, and toothaches are all symptoms of TMJ.
What Causes TMJ Syndrome?
1). Trauma: There are two types of trauma: macro trauma and microtrauma. Internal microtrauma occurs when people grind their teeth (bruxism) or clench their fists (jaw tightening). The constant hammering on the temporomandibular joint might cause the teeth to shift out of alignment. The membranes that surround the joint become inflamed as a result of muscle involvement. Teeth grinding and clenching are behaviors that can be diagnosed in patients ...
... who complain of temporomandibular joint discomfort or face pain that affects chewing muscles.
2). Osteoarthritis: The jaw joint, like other joints in the body, is prone to arthritic alterations. The disintegration of the joint or the regular wear and tear of age can both produce these alterations. Degenerative joint disease results in the gradual loss of cartilage and the development of new bone at the joint's surface. Rather than being caused by a single entity, cartilage degradation is caused by a combination of mechanical and biological causes.
3). Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that affects the joints and can impact the TMJ. The illness can destroy cartilage, erode bone, and finally lead to joint deformity as it develops. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune illness that affects the joints. It is a condition that affects several organs and is characterized by chronic joint inflammation. It can sometimes cause TMJ problems, especially in young children.
How do health care professionals diagnose TMJ syndrome?
To determine the source of the symptoms, a doctor will take the patient's medical history and do a physical examination. TMD cannot be diagnosed using a particular test. To confirm the diagnosis, a doctor may refer the patient to an oral and maxillofacial specialist, an otolaryngologist, or a dentist who specializes in jaw problems. An MRI of the temporomandibular joint may be ordered by a health care provider to detect deterioration to the jaw joint's cartilage and rule out other medical issues.
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disease that shares certain symptoms with TMD. When the trigeminal nerve is inflamed, it sends nerve impulses to the temporomandibular joint, causing face discomfort. Swollen lymph nodes, giant cell arteritis, salivary gland illness, sore throat, ill-fitting dentures, or dental braces are some of the other reasons for face or neck discomfort.
