In the past, about 15 years ago, website prototyping is non existent. It has no use then. Website is first introduced to the public then so only the basic codes are used. It is much simpler then that drawing a rough sketch of the website is all it takes to explain it to the clients. Today, websites are becoming more and more complex with the addition of applications and other systems. For this reason, web prototyping came into existence.

It all started with the paper and pencil prototyping. You might be surprised to know that this type is still being used in some primitive usability tests. However, to be able to understand the concepts and images using paper and pencil, you either have to be good at drawing or your client should have great amount of imagination.

The next stage of the development of website prototyping is the low fidelity prototype. It uses software such as HTML coding capability. This can already work like the actual website. If you incorporated forms in your site, by using low fidelity prototype can now manipulate the forms and data to simulate the real one. This way, user reaction is assessed ...
... so that any mistakes can be rectified appropriately.

Using low fidelity web site prototype, you will be able to define your requirements and make people understand what the site is about. This can also identify important features of the program and eliminate the unimportant ones. This type, however, does not use real text, animations and full detailed graphics.

The most advanced type of web site prototype is the high fidelity prototype. It is almost like the end product that has been quickly coded by means of software. It is like the low fidelity one but with graphics and animations involved. You can have pop ups, links, sums and data entries here as well.

The main difference between the real website and the high fidelity web site prototype is that the former is much more organized and smaller than the latter. High fidelity prototype looks professional when presented to clients and investors that is why it is used by many. However, if you do not yet have the budget to build one, you can go for the other types of prototype for the meantime.
