The process air is passed to the bed via a unique perforated distributor plate and then it is made to pass through the bed of solids at a velocity that's sufficient enough to hold up the weight of particles in a fluidized state. Bubbles form and crumble inside the fluidized bed of material encouraging strong particle movement. In this situation, the solids act as a free flowing boiling liquid.

In short, fluid bed drying heat is passed by the fluidization gas, but the gas flow need not be the only basis. Heat may be set up by heating surfaces (panels or tubes) absorbed in the fluidized layer.
