It was not long ago that Gurgaon was hardly known out of the region. That was however not for long and Gurgaon decided to shrug off the obscurity and don a new look. The makeover was in the form of a revolution that took this sleepy hamlet by storm and launched it to reach new heights. It is interesting to note that this revolution was not a government program, unlike most other industrialized cities which were undertaken to be modernized by the government. Gurgaon caught the attention of some of the best visionaries who could see its potential to be one of the most promising cities in the country.

According to legends, Gurgaon is the place which the royal Kauravas and the Pandavas gave as donation to their teacher, Dronacharya. Hence, the name Gurgaon or the ‘village of the Guru'. Another popular folklore associates Gurgaon with Gur or jaggery. It is believed that the locals were experts in making Gur and hence their village was called Gurgaon or the Jaggery village.

Before the IT and real estate revolution began changing the face of this land, it was largely dominated by the agricultural class. The entire ...
... area which is now known as Gurgaon was occupied by farmers of Haryana. They were however a poor lot owing to the barrenness of land and the resulting low produce. The revolutionary wave then brought in a breath of fresh air for these poor farmers. Ever since, there has been no looking back for Gurgaon. It is now known to be one of the most sought after and highly priced lands in the country. Within a span of some years the barren lands were transformed into complex modern structures with a maze of skyscrapers and flyovers. The change left Gurgaon beyond recognition. This development of infrastructure saw a mass influx of prominent companies on to the scene who in turn brought in a flood of professionals from all across the country, giving Gurgaon a new a unique culture and populace. It was then that it gained its cosmopolitan identity and character.

After the invasion of the town by the biggest names in the corporate arena, Gurgaon was now naturally captured by the best of shopping malls and the best known banners in the hospitality sector too. While the shopping malls are no less than the ones in Delhi, the finest of restaurants and eateries have also conquered Delhi. One will almost be amazed to see the number and range of hotels one can find in Gurgaon. From the best hotels in economy range to the most luxurious in the high priced class, Gurgaon has all types of hotels.
