Step into Sikkim and it is a different world altogether. Something that fascinates any visitor to the region is the unique feel which is so different from the rest of the country, yet is perfectly Indian. Gangtok, the state's capital showcases everything that Sikkim has to flaunt. The largest town in the sate, Gangtok is home to the most important state office too. Nestled in the high hills, it is a part of the Lower Himalayas and gets its name from this location itself which means hillside.

The height at which Gangtok is situated gives it a favorable climate and makes it a favorite with tourists, especially during the months when the plains are hot. The surroundings are particularly interesting with a hilly terrain and lush greenery. Gangtok's population is a mix of many races, dominated by north east Indians and people of Tibetan origin. The mixing of races and cultures has made the culture of Gangtok a unique one.

Gangtok abounds in places of tourist interest. Do Drul Chorten Stupa is undoubtedly the best draw to Gangtok. Built by the Nyingmapa sect, it houses ancient relics and is the most important stupa ...
... in the region. The monastery is particularly crowded when the annual chaam or masked dances are performed. The Orchid sanctuary here is another major attraction for the immense beauty it possesses. It is a delight to see thousands of orchids bloom. Tashding is one of the best places to enjoy some splendid views of the Kanchenjunga Mountains. The Tashding Monastery here is one of the most revered ones. The annual Bumchu festival here is worth observing. It is especially interesting for the practice of predicting future by holy waters.

Tsuklakhang or The Palace Monastery is one site one cannot afford to miss. It is home to innumerable Tibetan scriptures and some of the finest idols of Buddha. The Rumtek Monastery here is one of the largest of its kinds. The four-storeyed structure is bright and attractive and houses a 10 feet statue of Buddha. The Golden Stupa here is famous for its stunning gems and brilliant work. The Phodong Monsatery is the most serene monastery in the area. It houses around 250 monks and hosts the famous annual dance.

While on a trip to Gangtok, don't forget to visit the amazing markets here. The best known places are the Old Market, the New Market and the Lal Market. These areas have innumerable small shops selling handcrafted items including thangkas, religious scrolls and intricately carved wooden tables. Tibetan handicrafts and jewelry are also major buys.

Though, Gangtok looks pretty placid it has a lot to offer to the visitor. Enjoy the loveliness of the parks or live the spirituality of the monasteries, Gangtok is rejuvenating anytime. Just enjoy a hot momo or sip on to Sikkim Chai, everything is instantly refreshing.
