Having bad credit is a prospect most people worry about. There is good news, however. Even if you have a bad credit report you can fix it. Fixing a bad credit report is important for many reasons. Filing bankruptcy does not have to be the first resort if faced with debt and a bad FICO score.

Some steps that are necessary on the path to fixing your own credit report are:

* Get information as to what’s in your credit report. After getting copies, go through them to ensure that there are no errors. You would be surprised to know that in many instances there is incorrect information included in your credit report. If you find any inaccuracies, report them immediately to the credit agency that is responsible for the error. Also contact the creditor who reported the debt, and they may even make contact with the bureau on your behalf.

* Make a budget: many of us do not like making budgets, but when in debt it is a good way to track spending.

* Contact creditors as soon as you find that you will not be able to make your payments. In most instances, it may be possible to work out ...
... a manageable pay plan.

* Pay off all bad and old debts as quickly as possible. It is always best to tackle those debts with the highest interest rates first. In many cases, these are credit card debts.

* Avoid filing for bankruptcy if possible. If you file for bankruptcy as a last resort, be aware that it will remain on your credit reports for 10 years.

* Once you have paid off your debts, or at least the major ones, apply for a new credit card. This can be a secure card if it makes you feel better, and will definitely prevent you getting in debt via credit card spending. If you decide to go with an unsecured credit, make sure to pay off all balances when they become due. Try to be selective when applying for credit cards. Too many applications can be bad for building credit.

Why Fix Your Own Credit Report

There are lots of companies online that claim they can help fix your credit in a jiffy. Sadly, most are scams. First of all, it takes time to get your credit score improved. Secondly, you will end up spending money that could be better used to clear some of your outstanding debts.

It is possible to go to a debt consolidation company to get assistance, but this can be costly. Most of the time, whatever these agencies can do, you can do yourself. If you feel that you are in over your head, then by all means use a company that helps in fixing credit issues.

Fixing your own credit report takes a lot of hard work and discipline, but it will be worth it in the long run. Once you have dug yourself out of the hole, make every effort to avoid reverting to habits that can once again damage your credit.
