Many travel guides rank the Yucatan peninsula as one of the top places for international visitors to head to. Many of the same reasons for the choice of the area as a top travel pick also point to compelling reasons to buy Yucatan real estate and live in Mexico. Whether looking at the classic colonial city of Merida with it's romantic streets and traditional Mexican feel, or at the nearby beachfront areas, such as Cancun real estate, residents will enjoy much of the comfort and attractions which visitors seek, but as a part of their day to day life.

One recent web-based ranking placed Yucatan at the #4 spot for places to visit world-wide. The reasons were the pyramid sites of the ancient Mayan culture, affordable and easy access, as well as affordable traveling expenses, miles and miles of beautiful beachfront (near Cancun as well as along the northern shore of the peninsula, heading over to Progreso, only half an hour away from Merida.)

For real estate buyers, the affordable access is a plus, making visits to and from home easy; friends and family will also visit many times. The low expenses of a visitor's stay is reflected even more so in a low cost of day to day items, ranging from groceries to the electricity bill. Healthcare is also considerably cheaper than in the U.S., with much professional, personal service. Doctors will take more time for their patients and waiting lines rarely exist; with the rise of medical tourist, private hospitals in Mexico have risen to at least the standard of the U.S. For retirees, the city of Merida has recently announced new investment in retirement-focused facilities.

Overall, it is significantly cheaper to live in Mexico. Beyond the basics of living, this also includes many little luxuries, such as golfing, boating, going to movies or shopping just for pleasure.

While Merida offers all of this in the context of a romantic, colonial city, just down the road, Cancun likewise offers the best of modern services at accessible prices, directly on what many people consider to be the most beautiful beach in the world. With a slightly longer drive, residents of Cancun can also enjoy the history and culture of Yucatan's past.
