In people who have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the nerves in the lining of the bowel react to lectins, or identifying proteins, in certain foods. The lectins make these foods have the same effect on the bowel as a medication containing opium, such as paregoric. Common foods that cause constipation in IBS include wheat, dairy products, beef, pork, and lamb.

Adults with a intolerance to the gluten in wheat can experience diarrhea or constipation, along with some form of l inflammation in intestine, weak immunity, and severe headaches. All these symptoms may be mild but can still due by celiac disease. When the problem is celiac disease, the answer is eliminating ALL gluten protein from the diet. Other foods do not aggravate condition. It is important to choose a food intolerance test which is also called a food sensitivity test, which can identify culprits which is causing problem to your digestive system.

What about the rest of us? For most people, constipation has more to do with not drinking enough water or not getting enough exercise, taking ...
... too many laxatives or avoiding trips to the bathroom.
There are, however, foods that can cause constipation in nearly anyone. Some foods cause constipation if you don’t drink enough water, but are foods that relieve constipation if you do. Foods containing starch such as bananas, chicory, leeks, and onions, provide food for the helpful bacteria that live in the gut.
Even fiber, incidentally, can be one of the foods that cause constipation. Fiber-rich foods and fiber supplements to treat constipation can cause constipation if you don’t drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day.

Constipation and back pain often accompany one another. Constipation contributes to a condition doctors and chiropractors classify as "simple back pain." That is, constipation often causes back pain when no other source of back pain is obvious."Simple" back pain does not mean the pain is mild. The stress on the back associated with constipation can range from mild to severe.

Typically, they pain is one area of the lower back, but the pain can spread to the thighs or buttocks. If constipation and back pain are causally related, the pain is usually eased by lying down flat, and is often made worse by a sneeze or a cough.

Constipation is a sometime a reason for lower back pain in 90% of cases . The awkward twisting movement required to help the bowels move can be as damaging to back as heavy lifting or bad posture.

What kind of treatment should you pursue if you have both constipation and back pain?

Enemas are probably not a good idea. Having to lift your thighs and buttocks above the toilet, or having to lift a knee to your chest to take an enema on your side, both can cause a sudden attack of intense pain.

It’s also better not to take laxatives, especially some of the stronger herbal laxatives, such as cascara sagrada. Laxatives work by forcing some muscles to contract and others to relax. All the muscles affected by the laxative can also trigger back spasms.

Your best bets for relief of constipation and back pain are drinking more water, eating fruits and vegetables, and taking fiber. None of these methods will relieve constipation immediately, but neither will they trigger back spasms.

It’s also important to not that although constipation can cause back pain, the treatment of back pain can also cause constipation. Opioid drugs, notably Vicodin, are notoriously constipating.

Almost any drug you take for back pain, even aspirin, can cause constipation in a few people who take it, but the most effective, newer non-narcotic drugs for chronic pain cause constipation in less than 10%. Ask you doctor about alternative pain medication if you suffer both back pain and constipation

Constipation means different things to different people. For many people, constipation simply means infrequent bowel movement.

For others, constipation is not a matter of how often or seldom one goes to the bathroom, but whether symptoms are a problem. In this group, constipation means straining at hard stools, or a sense of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement.

"Severe constipation," however, usually is associated with a large mass of stool causing the abdomen to bulge outward and interfering with not just digestion but also with urination.

Conditions that cause severe constipation include the little known but surprisingly frequent condition Chagas disease. Millions of people in the world and approximately one fourth in India suffer this chronic infection also known as trypanosomiasis. Doctors sometime recommends infection checkup profile test to identify the cause of constipation.

If you have severe constipation caused by this condition, you may get a racing pulse when you go to the bathroom, and passing stool may cause you to faint. You may also have swollen ankles. Speak to your physician about the possibility of Chagas disease if you live in the US Southwest, or you have lived in Latin America, and you experience severe constipation with additional symptoms.

A better-known form of severe constipation is megacolon. Toxic megacolon occurs when the colon swells to many times its normal size. It is most commonly caused by severe inflammation and ulceration from Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. You are unlike to experience megacolon unless you have these conditions. Megacolon is an emergency situation requiring immediate surgical treatment. If it is not treated on time , It may result in death of the patient.

Finally, severe constipation can be caused by a congenital condition known as Hirschsprung's disease. This unfortunate condition is caused by the absence of nerve cells in the wall of the bowel. It is evident from birth.

Severe constipation, of whatever cause, requires medical treatment. Fortunately, severe constipation is relatively rare. As a general rule, see a physician if constipation is causing not only swelling in the abdomen but also interfering with other bodily functions. Drastic treatments may not be required, but seeing a doctor and undertaking a Master full body check up can save your life
