Establishing The Perfect Homeworkspace
One of the joys of working from home is getting out of bed and walking over to your workplace without changing your pyjamas. But what’s the downside of working from home?
If your workplace is ugly or impractical, it will affect your productivity. However, if you plan to work from home, creating a productive workspace should be your ONLY thing. With the right setup you can earn more, achieve better results and get more done in less time so you can get out of the home office and spend more time with your family.
To begin planning, let’s look at some of the challenges and solutions for creating great home workspace:
- Lack Of Space
Now that most of us (those who work from home) need a little more than a laptop-sized work surface, creating a workspace doesn’t take up much space. Measure the width of your required workspace, and then move around your home, keeping an eye out for spaces of a similar size. You might find an unused corner of the hallway, or a messy walk-in wardrobe that can be the perfect spot for a small, discreet home office.
- Lack Of Light
Unfortunately, unused corners ...
... in your home are often dark, but a well-lit workspace is a must. Perhaps you can brighten your workspace by painting the walls a light shade, hanging a mirror in a spot that reflects natural light from a nearby window. Most importantly, make sure you have several light sources, including – but not limited to – a good desk lamp, a full spectrum light bulb and indirect lighting.
- Lack Of Privacy
If you live with other adults or those famously productivity-enhancing housemates known as children, it can be difficult to find calm, concentration and privacy. While a closed office door does not guarantee peace. If you are unable to create a separate office space, improvise with room dividers like shelves, potted plants, or a translucent folding screen. Noise-cancelling headphones are a godsend in busy surroundings.
- Lack Of Storage Space
What you lack in square footage, you can make up by going high, with shelves and cabinets all the way to the ceiling and repository trays at eye level to augment a small desk. Make sure you have at least one “messy drawer” to prevent you from throwing. A clear desk policy is both a productivity boost and a great way to minimise the inevitable distractions when working from home.
