Why is frequent snacking bad for teeth? This is one of the questions that we have been asked by our patients who visit us. Well, “too much of anything is bad for health.” The same applies for dental health as well. There’s a high chance that you are snacking while reading this. A recent survey shows that, about 80% of people snack every day. Are you one among them? Over the years, we, dentists in Parramatta, have seen the damages that can be done to the teeth by snacking frequently. Constant snacking could be hinder the improvements in oral health, and the reason why snacking is so bad is quite straightforward.

Why Is Constant Snacking Bad For Oral And Overall Health?

Dental health is not just part of your health as it is the gateway to your overall health, and the foods you eat play a significant role. Yes, snacking throughout the day affects not only your dental health but also overall health. Snacks are loaded with too much sugar, artificial food colours, preservatives, salt, and oil. It can contribute to health conditions, including, high blood pressure, obesity, and heart disease. Of course, snacks ...
... are comforting, no preparation required, and are designed to addictive. The calories really add up and exceed your daily calorie count when you snack mindlessly and constantly. Even a small portion of snack could be surprisingly calorie-dense.

The health of your gums and teeth is partially dependent on the level of acidity in your mouth. Ideally, your mouth will have a neutral PH level, which is not too acidic or less. When you eat or drink something, the bacteria in your mouth will start breakdown you ate or the drink you had. During this process, the bacteria produce acids as well. Acids will eat away the enamel of your teeth over time. This process is called demineralisation. If your teeth are exposed to enough acid, you’ll start developing cavities.

However, this process will be reversed naturally through saliva as it contains calcium and phosphates, which will neutralise acids and restore to the normal PH level. Unfortunately, when you snack frequently, the bacteria will have more than enough supply of food and keep producing acid. Saliva can’t keep up. In addition to it, starchy foods can stick between your teeth and cause cavities.

Reduce Snacking and Clean Your Teeth

One of the best ways to protect your teeth and gums is to reduce or stop snacking frequently and sticking to a balanced, healthy diet. Also, clean your teeth after every meal so that food particles are removed from teeth and gums. Visit the dentist Parramatta every six months for a check-up and cleaning.
