It is common to see people dedicate a considerable amount of time to the care and maintenance of their beloved lawns, but often times, the lawns do not reflect all the attention they receive. The problem is, many homeowners make innocent yet nonetheless harmful mistakes that ruin the appearance of their lawns and gardens.

If this is you, then you're in for some luck as this article discusses the most common lawn care mistakes that homeowners make. The best way to ensure that your yard remains in remarkable condition is to steer away from common lawn mismanagement that can destroy it.

The following is a list of the most common mistakes you must look to avoid, if you wish to lawns and gardens to look their magnificent best, all year round.

1) Overwatering the grass

Although just as food is vital to sustaining life, so is water to plants. But excessive watering of your plants can be detrimental to your lawn’s survival. When you apply too much water, you are unconsciously drowning your grass because too much water makes the soil over-saturated, making it difficult for the grass roots ...
... to absorb moisture.

2) Cutting the grass too short and too often

Everyone desires to have properly manicured lawns. However, cutting your grass too short and too often can also pose a threat to the survival of your yard. Short grass is often too weak to produce a firm root. Short length grass also reduces its ability to survive when heat levels rise to an extreme level. So, how do you decide the perfect height for your grass? Simply apply the rule of thumb, which states, "cut only one-third of the height of your grass at a time."

3) Using too much fertilizer

Think about how your body reacts to overfeeding! Not too well, right? Applying the same analogy to plants will give you a proper understanding of how bad excessive feeding can be for your grass. For instance, too much nitrogen causes excessive leaf growth with poor root growth, making your grass weak. As a rule, look to feed your grass with slow-release fertilizer twice a year. Once during winter to strengthen the grass, and another during spring when the grass begins to grow.

4) Attempting to grow plants that aren’t compatible with your climate

You must pay close attention to the type of species you plan to grow on your lawn. The fact that your neighbor grows a particular species does not indicate that you need to follow suit. You need to understand your type of soil, otherwise you may find yourself growing plants that aren’t compatible with your soil type. Carrying out this background check will save you time and energy that would have been wasted on planting the wrong species.

5) Not designating a specific area for your pets to go to the toilet

You should train your pets not to wet the lawn with their urine or excrement. Pets' urine contains a high concentration of salts, nitrogen, and ammonia, all of which are extremely destructive to your lawn’s health. So, what options are available to you as a pet owner? The best you can do is train your pet(s) to get used to going to the toilet in a specific area of your yard, where you can easily bury their business beneath the ground. What if it's urine? Well, your best bet is to water it if you catch them doing it.

Conclusion
