Piperazine derivatives may be found in “Ecstasy” pills as a substitute for MDMA. Metachlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) is an indirect serotonergic antagonist but another piperazine derivative trifluoromethyl-piperazine is a direct serotonergic antagonist but both drugs do not have any dopaminergic activity. Benzyl piperazine is an indirect dopamine and noradrenaline agonist without serotonergic properties. However, drug abusers report more unpleasant effects with this drug compared to MDMA. Aminoindanes such as 5,6-methylenedioxy-2-aminoindane and 5-iodoaminoindane are also abused but are less neurotoxic than MDMA
