If you’ve been grinding your teeth for a while, or if perhaps you just recently found out you grind your teeth, chances are you’re looking for a solution to help you stop. It’s no secret that there are multiple damaging effects of grinding, and the sooner you start finding a solution, the sooner you can stop those negative effects in their tracks. There isn’t necessarily a one size fits all solution since teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a complex condition with multiple interconnected causes, but there are several options out there to help stop the daily or nightly grind.

One of the most commonly recommended solutions for how to stop grinding teeth is to wear a night guard or mouth guard. A night guard acts as a protective barrier between your teeth to protect them from the damage of grinding, as well as absorb some of the tension that would otherwise go to your jaw joint. This helps to not only prevent the wearing down of your teeth, but also helps to decrease or eliminate headaches that are frequently associated with teeth grinding and clenching. One downside of night guards is that they don’t target ...
... the precise cause of grinding itself, but they do offer an effective and quick way to eliminate the symptoms and stop damage from taking hold.

If you’re looking for a solution for how to stop grinding teeth in your sleep naturally, one option is to use stress relief strategies. It is now well documented that stress and anxiety are primary culprits behind teeth grinding and clenching, so implementing coping strategies to deal with stress may be a way to also combat teeth grinding.  How does stress cause you to grind your teeth? Most research seems to suggest that the connection between the two seems to point to our bodies’ “fight or flight” response to stress. When stress hormones are released, they act on our muscles to tense them and make them ready for action. Even though no physical threat exists when we are feeling psychological stress, our bodies still react in a physical way. As such, our powerful jaw muscles are also affected by stress hormones and may tense, resulting in grinding and clenching of our teeth.

To help reduce teeth grinding naturally through stress relief strategies, it’s best to seek out strategies that work best for you personally. Whether it’s doing yoga, going for a walk, using deep breathing techniques, or focusing on changing your mindset, different strategies work differently for different people. Though there are many ways to help reduce stress, learning how to deal with stress and anxiety can often be difficult and can take time and dedication to work on eliminating it.

Another potential solution for how to stop clenching teeth is Botox, though this is typically only recommended to people who don’t respond to more conservative options. Botox works by weakening the activation of muscles. In the case of bruxism, it’s targeted to the muscles of the jaw. This causes the muscles responsible for grinding and clenching to be weakened or immobilized so that they can’t cause their usual damage. Though only a few studies have been done on Botox for bruxism, those studies have shown very promising results. Anecdotally, many people have found dramatic results from using Botox for their clenching and grinding. Of course, you should always consult with your doctor before starting any new treatments.

If you’re searching for solutions for how to stop your teeth grinding, whether through natural methods or through more intensive methods, it’s important to choose the method that’s right for you, your teeth, and your overall health.
