The green valleys and protecting slopes of Transcaucasia have been a home to vine production and winemaking for at least 8,000 years. Due to this, the roots of wine are weaved into Georgia‘s national uniqueness. Here you'll find all the important details and knowledge about Georgian wine.

What are the most important wine-producing regions in Georgia?

Wine is produced across the country, and different grape varietals have their own micro-zones spread throughout the country. However, Kakheti, which is divided into the two micro-regions of Kvareli and Telavi, is the most well-known area for producing Georgian wine. Nowadays, you can buy Georgian wine online.

What is the size of Georgia's wine market?

Georgia, after Moldova, is the second-largest producer of grapes in the former Soviet Union. In the former Soviet countries, Georgian wines have always been praised. Hundreds of small farmers, monasteries, and factories manufacture the beverage today, using both conventional and European methods.

What makes Georgian grapes unique?

Georgia's climate and geographical conditions are ideal ...
... for winemaking. Extreme weather is uncommon here; summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool and frost-free. Natural springs abound in the region, which originate in the Caucasus Mountains and flow into the valleys.

What are some of the most well-known Georgian wines?

• Tsinandali is a white wine made from a blend of Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane grapes grown in the Kakheti region's micro-zones of Kvareli and Telavi.

• Tvishi is a semi-sweet white wine made from the Tsolikauri grape that is naturally sweet.

• Alaznis Veli is a semi-sweet white wine made from a blend of Tsolikauri, Rkatsiteli, Tetra, and other varietals of grapes produced in the country's eastern and western regions. The wine has a straw colour and a well-balanced flavour.

• Mukuzani, a red wine which looks dry made exclusively from Saperavi grapes grown in Kakheti and Mukuzani, is aged in oak for three years to add flavour and complexity. It is one of the finest dry reds made from Saperavi grapes.

• Kindzmarauli is a naturally semi-sweet, high-quality wine with the dark red colour made from Saperavi grapes grown on the Caucasian mountain slopes in the Kakheti region's Kvareli district.

• Khikhvi is a white dessert wine made from the Khikhvi grape, which has been grown in Kardanakhi, Georgia, since 1924. The wine is amber in colour and has a light flavour.

• Akhasheni is a naturally semi-sweet red wine made in Kakheti from the Saperavi grape. The wine has a dark pomegranate colour and a velvety texture with a chocolate flavour.

• Khvanchkara is a high-end, naturally semi-sweet red wine made from a combination of Mudzhuretuli and Alexandria grapes grown in Racha's Khvanchkara vineyards.

• Tannins are well-balanced, and the wine has a raspberry flavour. One of the most well-known Georgian semi-sweet wines is this dark ruby-colored wine.
