One of the reasons I love men's ministry is that it has had a significant effect on my life over the last three decades. I enjoy delving into God's Word with other gentlemen. I enjoy the teasing and laughter, as well as the friendship and the many ways that men can work together in ministry. So, what does it take to have a life-changing, fruitful men's ministry? Here are some characteristics to consider as you develop an efficient men's ministry:

Long-term, low-pressure situation.

Making a disciple takes a long time. We need to allow men to observe and stand on the rim of what we're doing. Men progress at various rates. Enable them to come on board at their own pace and at their own level of involvement.

Task Oriented vs. Relationship Oriented

Building partnerships is the cornerstone of a good men's ministry. Men would lack a sense of community if they do not have genuine and deep relationships with one another. There will be no glue to keep men together until the scheduled event is over if we just call men together to "do." Men are drawn to events, but relationships keep them.

Every Man's ...
... Five Responsibilities:

Every man must be informed that he has five areas in which he must take personal responsibility. There is no one else who can or will do these things for a man:
His friendship with his wife and his walk with God, His personal finances, His relationship with his children, His well-being.

Ministry involvement

The aim of a men's ministry is to make disciples of the men who participate in it. This requires, however, equipping men in your ministry to do the same.

Setting up mission trips or ministry activities that use the gifts and expertise of the men in your ministry is one concept. Men will have plenty of opportunities to serve others if a men's ministry is successful.

Obviously, there are many avenues for Christian men's ministry and non-Christian men's outreach to grow and thrive in a church, but be careful of beginning too much too soon. It's much easier to start small, with one or two unique events or daily meetings, and then expand from there. Although we've given you some ideas to get you thinking, you don't have to start planning men's breakfasts, dinners, conferences, evangelistic social or sporting activities, or weekend retreats right away! Simply begin with what is feasible and necessary in your case.
