Find The Right Treatment For Yourself Or A Loved One With An Eating Disorders Therapist
Eating disorders that include anything from overeating to anorexia nervosa and bulimia, are very serious behavioural disorders that require professional treatment. Even food addiction is an eating disorder that can lead to severe obesity. Individuals suffering from eating disorders' biggest problems are found in their relationship with food, how they perceive it and their love or hostility towards food.
Although doctors and psychologists have been searching for years for the exact causes of food or eating disorders, it seems that there is no pertinent cause. However, television and social media in most cases express an 'ideal image' of how women (or men) should look, and in younger individuals, peer pressure also plays a large part.
While a balanced intake of different nutrition-rich foods is the overall goal, and eating disorders therapist will during treatment, always strive to first address the individual's perception of food and other external influences.
An eating disorder is a pattern in which people subconsciously try to deal with their problems or life issues by focusing on their relationship with ...
... food. However, it quickly becomes a negative relationship where the individual constantly struggles with their inner and physical problems. A person suffering from disorders like Bulimia or anorexia, can and should never be forced to eat as it can aggravate or worsen their condition.
For loved ones, it is just as difficult to deal with eating disorders within their family circle, especially since it is a behavioural disorder that few people fully understand. This puts tremendous pressure on parents who sometimes unknowingly want to deal with the problem themselves. Eating disorders require professional treatment and eating disorders therapists are specifically trained in the area so that they can provide the help and guidance these individuals need.
What sometimes begins for many individuals as a normal diet just to lose a few pounds can later turn into a serious illness that can land them in a hospital. Due to the degree of severity, eating disorders are never taken lightly, and the sooner an individual receives treatment, the better their chances of complete recovery.
The internet is covered with success stories of individuals who, with the right treatment, have overcome their personal challenges and conquered the dreadful disease, but it can also be a dark place where many individuals find inspiration to further fuel their dysregulated behaviours (which are accompanied by their eating disorder).
The appropriate treatment for eating disorders can be very effective, but because they are considered as complex mental health disorders, and eating disorders therapist will dig very deep into the psyche of the individual concerned. Although it would seem that environmental, biological and psychological factors can be highlighted as possible causes of eating disorders, it is important for the therapist to explore all possibilities, in order to find an effective solution through counselling.
When it comes to Bulimia and anorexia, there are also numerous misconceptions among members of the public, which sometimes make it difficult for loved ones to act on time. There is a clear distinction between the two, in the sense that individuals who suffer from Anorexia are constantly weighing themselves and they start consuming less and less food, whereas Bulimia sufferers often overeat themselves until they become nauseous and start to throw up, or they would induce vomiting by sticking a finger down their throat.
People who suffer from eating disorders cannot help themselves, and they also often do not desire to be helped, therefore intervention is sometimes required but it must be handled in the right, legal manner.
If you want to know more about the different types of eating disorders and how they are treated by professionals, the internet is a good place to start, but also make sure you find a suitable eating disorders therapist to help that person (or yourself) through this process as soon as possible. Waiting another day could mean one day too late!
