IV Therapies are mostly performed by experienced doctors in hospitals to patients who cannot consume any food items through the mouth. These therapies are provided to patients suffering from dehydration due to the treatments like chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and medications. Several types of IV therapies are currently existing in our modern medicine such as IV therapy for fluids, blood transfusions, medications, and nutrition, etc.

Origin of IV Therapy

IV therapies have a long history, cause it was used firstly in the 1600s, the procedures of treatment were unhygienic, so this practice was banned. Then, this sort of treatment became a lifesaving one during World War One, but it started to evolve into its original form now due to the hard work of Dr. John Myers who developed a cocktail of several vitamins for feeding the patients who are unable to consume food items through the mouth. He confirmed the success of treatment by evaluating the medical treatment history of patients, and also took blood tests to make sure all the nutrients are infused into the patient’s body.

Complications in IV Therapy

Considering ...
... the other modes of treatment, IV therapy is comparatively safer than others, but the poor management of treatment may cause certain problems. Following are the complications incurred in IV therapies:

• Phlebitis: The inflammation caused to veins cab be taken as phlebitis, this can occur in case of the needle is too large. By taking injections with appropriate or smaller needles according to the patients can avoid this after effect. Some of the symptoms of phlebitis include redness around the vein, swelling, pain, etc.

• Extravasation: This occurs, when the injected IV fluid gets leaked and surrounds the neighboring tissues, usage of big needles is the main cause for extravasation. Symptoms such as swelling around the IV site and burning sensation are seen as a result of this.

• Air Embolism: Air Embolism is a dangerous situation to be considered because careless treatment may result in the death of the patient. It occurs when an air bubble enters the vein of the patient, there is a chance for death because the air can travel to the lungs, heart, and brain. Proper hydration is the effective remedial measure for this. Low blood pressure and difficulty in breathing are common symptoms seen.

• Hypervolaemia: Hypervolaemia is commonly seen in pregnant women, aged patients, and young children. People with any kidney disease also have a higher chance of occurring hypervolaemia. This condition can be termed as an abnormal increase in the volume of blood. Increased heart rates and distended neck veins are common symptoms seen in these cases.

• Infection: While, taking the injections, the injecting part of the skin must be well cleaned, otherwise there is a chance of causing infections, proper sterilization and maintaining good hygienic conditions can help to prevent infections. Some symptoms of infections include swelling, fever, and pain.
