Goal: This review summarizes present knowledge of mephedrone density in biological samples from cases of acute intoxication and anonymous pooled urine analysis to offer an overview of the dependable scientific knowledge on toxicokinetics of mephedrone in humans.

Study Design: Observational case series of the consecutive patients with suspected or self-reported use of NPS presenting to the hospitals in Sweden between August 2012 and March 2014.

Techniques: NPS analysis was carried out by a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique that is updated with new substances as they seem. The date on the clinical attributes were accumulated during Poisons Information Centre consultations and retrieved from the medical records.

Outcomes: Since 2010, a total of 97 fatal cases and 57 non-fatal intoxication cases were recognized. 3MMC was detected in 50 of 786 cases included in the STRIDA project during the 20 month study period, with the peak happening in August 2013. The age range of the patients tested positive for 3-MMC was 17-49 years, and 76% of them were men. The 3-MMC density in serum ranged between .002 and 1.49. Most of the patients required hospital care for just a single day and maximum 3 days or longer.

Conclusion: Most of the patients with analytically confirmed 3-MMC exposure had sympathomimetic features just like those associated with mephedrone intoxication. Nonetheless, the high incidence of co-exposure to other drugs makes the clinical interpretations hard. However, 3-MMC was associated with high admittance rate to intensive care and detected two cases with a fatal result, recommending that 3-MMC is a harmful drug.
